TV Ratings: Basketball A Slam Dunk For ABC

6/13/2013 8:35am EDT
'America's Got Talent'
A lot of people spend their time going out for ice cream rather than watching TV in the summertime. Ratings typically dwindle, and in rerun-land, atypical programs often claim the top spots. Last week, NBA Finals games nabbed the Top 3 spots on both ABC and TNT.

NBC had a pretty good week, topped by ‘The Voice’ and ‘America’s Got Talent’ in 4th and 5th place, respectively. CBS had to settle having seven reruns in the Top 20, although its Tony Awards broadcast did well in 11th place. With ‘American Idol’ out the window for now, FOX had only one show in the Top 20, ‘Masterchef,’ which averag...

America’s Got Talent premieres its latest season of competition this week, and judge Howard Stern returns to evaluate their performances. The reigning King of All Media himself, Stern knows how important mentorship is, and looks forward to offering his feedback this summer.

“I really value the idea that I could mentor someone,” Stern said. “When they come before me, I think of my own career, how I had longevity and how I managed to keep things going. So when I looked at it, I said, ‘You know, I could say to a young guy or young woman, “You could really make it if you did this, this and thi...

Melanie Brown
Former Spice Girls singer Melanie Brown has been unveiled as Sharon Osbourne's replacement as a judge on America's Got Talent.

Ozzy Osbourne's wife quit the TV competition, which also features comedian Howie Mandel and shock jock Howard Stern on the panel, last year following a disagreement with bosses at NBC, the network behind the show.

Brown, who previously appeared on Dancing with the Stars and worked as a judge on the Australian version of The X Factor, has now signed up to take over Osbourne's chair, and TV bosses are convinced contestants will benefit from her "constructive feedb...

Child dance troupe The Untouchables came in last place. The group got a little emotional when they learned they wouldn't be taking home the grand prize. Judge Sharon Osbourne said to them, "Don't be sad, little ones, because...

The Worst And The Best Of Summer TV 2012

9/6/2012 6:00pm EDT
Honey Boo Boo
Summer. Some might think of it as a time to take a few days off, soak up the sun and eat popsicles. I think of it as the time for the most delicious and smutty television. Let’s face it: networks don’t exactly roll out the red carpet for your summer viewing pleasure. Instead, it’s the B-list shows that somehow made it through production but weren’t good enough to be shown through the regular season. And for that, I heartily thank the networks (and air conditioning) for the good and bad TV shows that tided me through the summer months.

Click through our list and let us know what would make ...

TV Ratings: 'The Closer' Rocks It In Finale

8/23/2012 9:28am EDT
'The Closer'
Without the Olympics to entertain us, viewers turned to cable last week. While shows like ‘America’s Got Talent’ on NBC topped the chart, the finale of ‘The Closer’ closed out its run with over 9 million viewers, and would have placed third on the overall charts. Its spinoff, ‘Major Crimes,’ had a good debut with 7.2 million.

Otherwise, it was business as usual. ‘The Big Bang Theory' was the top scripted program with 8 million viewers, good for 4th place. And Gordon Ramsey’s new reality series, ‘Hotel Hell,’ attracted 5.1 million viewers, typical of his other programs. It narrowly missed o...

Sharon Osbourne
Bosses at NBC have responded to Sharon Osbourne's allegations she resigned from America's Got Talent over a dispute with company chiefs over her son Jack's multiple sclerosis diagnosis.

Sharon claims she felt compelled to quit her role as a talent show judge when Jack was allegedly dropped from new show Stars Earn Stripes, in which celebrities battle it out in military training sessions, after he revealed his heartbreaking news to the public earlier this year.

However, NBC executives insist they supported Jack following his diagnosis and, while they did not ask him to compete in the sho...

TV Ratings: All Networks Have Something To Sing About

7/11/2012 7:45pm EDT
'America's Got Talent'
As our summer TV lineup limps along, the glory was spread across all networks, ratings-wise, last week. NBC claimed the top show with ‘America’s Got Talent’ and did well with its annual Fireworks show (good for 7th place) and more U.S. Olympic trials. CBS, meanwhile, held strong with repeats of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ (3rd and 4th place, respectively), ‘NCIS’ and ‘Person of Interest,’ among others. Its newsmagazines also fared well, topped by ’60 Minutes’ and ’48 Hours Mystery.’

FOX had four shows in the Top 10 in the 18-49 category – two editions each of ‘Hell’s Kitchen’ and ‘Masterchef.’ A...

TV Ratings: ABC Is Tops With NBA Finals; NBC Strong With 'America's Got Talent'

6/27/2012 8:58pm EDT
'America's Got Talent'
It was a ho-hum TV week. Remember all that fuss about ABC airing ‘The Glass House’ over CBS’ objections? Americans shrugged their shoulders and the snow nabbed only about 4 million viewers. Even in the summer doldrums, that’s good for only 63rd place. CBS needn’t worry.

ABC did win the week among total viewers, but that’s only because the last two games of the NBA finals claimed the top 2 spots on the chart. CBS did just fine, thank you: Reruns of shows like ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘NCIS’ thrived, while ’60 Minutes’ placed in the Top 10.

Over on NBC, ‘America’s Got Talent’ came in 3rd, ...

When Mir Money stopped his performance judge Howie Mandel asked the boy if he was angry, which he said he wasn't....

5/15/2012 4:07pm EDT
Howard Stern
Howard Stern more or less behaved himself last night on America's Got Talent, but that doesn't mean he was boring. Here are some of his best quotes from the show.

Stern first asked the audience if they thought he would last on the family-friendly show. "These executives at NBC must be out of their mind taking a risk on me... I say I won't make it through the first show -- what do you think?" He asked as he looked at the crowd, to cheers.

Howard has some glowing remarks for a few acts. He told a group using glowing costumes to simulate prehistoric life, "We are the greatest country in the ...

Jennifer Lopez Gives Reality Show Rival Britney Spears Some Judging Tips

5/15/2012 3:00pm EDT
Britney Spears
Fox network execs officially revealed yesterday that Demi Lovato and Britney Spears are the two new judges on "The X Factor" alongside Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid.

Cowell famously stepped down from "American Idol" to helm "The X Factor," and it had disappointing ratings in its first season. That led him to fire pal Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger from the judging panel. He snagged Demi and Britney, who will probably bring some new life to the show.

Jennifer Lopez, who has been judging "American Idol" for two seasons, has a little advice for Spears.

Lopez told Entertainment Tonight, "J...

Howard Stern Makes An Excellent Addition To 'America's Got Talent'

5/15/2012 8:55am EDT
America's Got Talent
"America's Got Talent" kicked off its seventh season on Monday night with a new addition to the judging panel - Howard Stern. Skeptics weren't sure how he would respond to the (sometimes wacky) contestants, but he did surprisingly well.

The talent competition kicked off with a "magician" who required a ring to do his trick. After Nick Cannon claimed his wedding band (from wife Mariah Carey) wouldn't come off his finger, Howie Mandel reluctantly jumped on stage with the guy and handed his over.

The magician made a few bad jokes and was given the "X" by Stern twice (he pushed Mandel's bu...

Can Howard Stern Stay Family-Friendly On 'America's Got Talent'?

5/14/2012 3:03pm EDT
Howard Stern
Can a man who once bared his backside as Fartman maintain a clean-shaven image on primetime television? NBC must be hoping Howard Stern displays a cleaner side on America's Got Talent, unless they are banking on controversy to up their ratings.

Stern is replacing Piers Morgan who, while brutal in his judging, was always professional. Stern says he has been judging for a while now, having had dozens of acts go on his radio show. "This really fit what I built a career on," Stern said at a press junket. "We've had people come on the radio show for years that are talented or really odd. We’ve ...

Stern is worried Spears, who famously suffered numerous public meltdowns, won't be able to take the pressure of such a high-profile TV role and will have little to contribute.

He tells Access Hollywood, "Bri...

5/10/2012 3:20pm EDT
Howard Stern - America's Got Talent
Howard Stern gave a press conference today about joining America’s Got Talent as a judge in New York. Describing some of his favorite Talent acts, he described a group that caught his fancy with a raunchy, injurious slapstick.

“It’s true Vaudeville,” Stern said. “One guy’s act is he gets kicked in the nuts. He comes out with three guys, takes off his pants, you can see he’s not wearing a cup and they start to kick him in the balls. I’m laughing like it’s the Three Stooges or Jackass. I say, ‘I‘m going to put you through but you’ve got to keep stepping it up. Do you have children?’ He had t...
