Q&A: Courtney Thorne-Smith Talks 'Two and a Half Men'

April 9th, 2012 8:00am EDT
Courtney Thorne-Smith
Courtney Thorne-Smith has made a name for herself in television, whether you remember her breakout role on the original Melrose Place, or her portrayal of Georgia Thomas on Ally McBeal, or her stint as Cheryl on the long-running According To Jim. These days, she's brought her experience and energy to Two and a Half Men as Lyndsey MacElroy, the on-again, off-again girlfriend of Alan (Jon Cryer).

I recently talked with Courtney about what she enjoys about the role, her thoughts on the transition from Charlie Sheen to Ashton Kutcher, and if she can possibly pick a favorite part from her sma...

TV Sitcoms: The Laughs Are Dying

August 7th, 2009 11:53am EDT
Entourage
Say what you will about "According To Jim", but it at least it had jokes. Yes, jokes. Remember those? The old set-up, punch line routine intended to make audiences laugh. They used to be a staple of television comedies. Laugh-track or no, comedy shows on television were once designed to simply elicit guffaws from the viewing audience, whether or not we heard them.

But today, the laughs are dying. And this isn't a "Parks and Recreation" kind of demise where the jokes are just bad. Instead, comedies have stopped making jokes altogether.

Consider the comedies on television this sum...

An Open Letter To Paul Abdul: Leaving 'Idol' Is A Bad Idea

July 22nd, 2009 9:31am EDT
Paula Abdul
Dear Paula Abdul,

I am writing on behalf of the Shelley Longs, Geri Halliwells, Wayne Rogers and Sherry Stringfields of the world when I give you three simple words of advice regarding your decision to leave American Idol: Don't do it.

I'm not really sure why you'd need me to tell you this, but based on the rumors flying across the Internet and the statements of your own manager, you're really thinking about leaving the most successful television series of the decade over some sort of personal insult. Or is it money? Nobody can really be sure what's going through your pill-filled head...

Famous June Brides: Happily Ever After?

June 3rd, 2008 8:30am EDT
Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban
Historically, some married in the month of June to honor Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage. Others did it to time conception so births wouldn't interfere with harvest work. Brides in the 15th century chose to marry in June because it coincided with their "annual bath" - you read right - thus ensuring a relatively sweet-smelling honeymoon.

Centuries later, June has remained the most popular month to wed. In MGM's 1954 Academy Award-winning musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers the song "June Bride" trills: "Oh, they say when you marry in June, you're a bride all your life."

Summer TV Preview: ABC, CBS, NBC & Fox

May 28th, 2008 9:43am EDT
Hell
Memorial Day has come and gone, and with its passing the summer of 2008 has (unofficially) begun. It wasn't so many years ago that the summer quarter was little more than an exercise in futility for the networks. They figured that no one would want to stay indoors on beautiful summer evenings to watch original programming, so they instead filled the schedule with repeats of shows that weren't interesting the first time around. Occasionally, viewers were treated to the burn-off episodes of a failed (and swiftly canceled) offering from the prior season. Yippee.

That all changed a few...

ABC Stresses Stability, Not Ingenuity, With 2008-09 Schedule

May 14th, 2008 8:28am EDT
Ugly Betty
NBC got a jump start on the other broadcast networks with its "in-front" presentation last month, which occurred a full six weeks before the traditional upfront period. At that time NBC, mired in last place amongst the Big Four (poor CW barely registers as a blip and therefore does not count), presented a bold, dynamic and risky 2008-09 year-round schedule.

In the weeks that followed, there was naturally some speculation as to whether or not the other networks would follow NBC's lead and change the rules of the game. ABC, which unveiled its 2008-09 plans yesterday, was the first to...

What's The Best Show On TV Right Now? Starpulse Writers Weigh In

April 21st, 2008 8:33am EDT
Best TV Show?
What makes a TV show great? Is it the number of viewers or awards it has received? Not necessarily. In its last season, less than 3 million people tuned in to an episode of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," but it is unarguably one of the best sci-fi/fantasy shows of all time. In seven seasons, the show won just one Emmy - in 1998 for outstanding makeup. Guess what other fan favorite won just one Emmy (also for outstanding makeup)? Gilmore Girls.

Despite both series' original and witty screenwriting, they never received the props they deserved. Sarah Michelle Gellar and Lauren Graham bo...

'Melrose Place': Where Are They Now?

February 25th, 2008 12:00pm EST
Melrose Place
Sixteen years ago we were first introduced to Melrose Place, an innocent (at least it started that way) spin-off of Beverly Hills, 90210 that took place in a West Hollywood apartment complex. I know as an 8-year-old boy I was excited to see what the lives of 20-something people would be like. I assumed lots of swimming and talking about art. I was wrong, so very very wrong. Seeing as the show ended its run almost 10 years ago we should look back and see just where those over-sexed and off-kilter roommates have gone. Now I can relate to what the show was about!

Grading The TV Networks: It's Report Card Time

The last two television seasons have had it all. We've seen everything from the birth of a broadcast network (the CW) to the most debilitating industry work stoppage in 20 years. Now it's time to take a closer look at each of the five major broadcast networks and see what they are doing right, what needs improvement, and where they stand.

Like any true report card, we won't be judging the networks on any one category alone. Although overall ratings are a factor, they are not the only factor. Also, we will be looking at the time period from Fall of 2006 (when the CW debuted) to pres...

10 Worst TV Shows Of The Last 10 Years

According to Jim
There have been some truly phenomenal television shows produced over the last 10 years. Works of art that will continue to be appreciated and discussed for years to come. But what's the fun in talking about that?

For each great show created since 1998, there have been at least five or six terrible ones. Often these truly odious programs have a mercifully short lifespan. Occasionally, one will unexpectedly survive and thrive, shining proudly on screen and mocking the infinitely more creative, entertaining and intelligent programs that it has outlasted.
