Eric sets up a visit for Peter and his dog to visit the residents of a drug rehab center, where he ends up trying to help a man end his estrangement with his son. Lucy decides to get athletic, much to Kevin's chagrin, when she finds out he's been coaching for his police softball league and wants to join the team. Meanwhile, Chandler finds his issues with Roxanne linger just as he's about to go out with Paris, while Cecilia must convince Martin her relationship with Simon is finished.
Charity Begins at Home
Eric's sermon about reaching out to help others in need prompts him to reach out to people in his own life, and he asks Carlos to join the family for dinner by himself. Kevin tries to get Lucy to help him start up a neighborhood watch. Ruthie befriends a shy girl during a school project, but tries to spend some time away from Peter. Meanwhile, Annie vies with Cecilia for the attention of the twins, while Chandler and Roxanne find themselves revisiting old emotions when they bump into each other.
High and Dry
On their first wedding anniversary, Lucy and Kevin think about whether or not they're ready to start a family, while Cecilia and Martin begin to question how far their own relationship can go if Cecilia ends up leaving for college. Meanwhile, after Peter is presumed missing, Vic and Eric team up to find him, but are shocked when they catch him with some friends and a bottle of alcohol.
When Bad Conversations Happen to Good People
When Matt comes home for a visit, he tells Eric and Annie that Sarah has left him and that he intends to drop out of medical school. Kevin worries about Lucy's reaction when his ex-wife comes into town and invites them both for dinner. Meanwhile, Peter, who worries that his mother won't come back from her out-of-town trip, finds himself bonding with Chandler, who hopes to marry his mother and become part of his family.
Two Weddings, an Engagement, and a Funeral
As Annie's half-sister Lily prepares to get married, Annie worries about Lily's intention to have their frail father walk her down the aisle. Meanwhile, Chandler counsels Fred and Mrs. Bink before their own nuptuals, but the couple faces the wrath of Fred's mother, who views Mrs. Bink as a money-grubbing temptress. Chandler also faces the opposition of a set of parents trying to stop their mentally-challenged son from marrying a mentally-challenged woman.
Simon's Home Video
Simon makes a video essay for his college application and talks about his family and friends, their mistakes and triumphs and their relationships with one another, as well as his own agony over his fatal car accident.
The Prodigal Father
Peter is stunned when his father, Vic, who he only knows as the angry alcoholic who left his family three years ago, returns to mend ways with him and his mother, Paris. The news also stuns Chandler, who now wonders what the nature of his own relationship with Peter will be. While Ruthie seeks advice from Eric about how to deal with Peter during this time, he suggests that it's Vic who may need some reaching out to from the community.
Healing Old Wounds
Tyler's father pays his son a visit while on leave from his military post in Iraq and tensions ensue. While trying to help Martin make a decision on his future of baseball or college, he also gives Martin an eyeful when he's caught kissing Roxanne. Meanwhile, Paris' ex-husband comes back and throws her relationship with Chandler in jeopardy.
The Camdens begin to worry about Annie when she copes with her father's death by exhibiting an unusally high amount of joy, a joy which ends up raising the spirits of the whole town. Meanwhile, Chandler takes a meeting with a lawyer to discuss Eric's suggestion of adopting a child.
Eric accompanies Simon to a Board of Education meeting to try and secure him an early graduation, and Simon finds he has something in common with his new advisor: They're both the sons of preachers. Kevin is tricked into babysitting Detective Michaels' six-year old, and Cecilia watches over the twins. Meanwhile, Lucy sees Chandler kissing an attractive woman in church and wonders whether Roxanne should know or not, and Peter tries to keep Ruthie safe from a bully.
The Long Bad Summer (Part 1)
The Camdens, along with Peter, spend their last week of summer at a beach house in an effort to relax after Simon is involved in a car accident which has left a schoolmate dead, and the church sign is vandalized with a hate message from the victim's brother. At the same time, Chandler presses Roxanne with his intention to marry her and Lucy and Kevin contemplate having a baby. With the family unable to help Simon cope, he decides to run off to see Matt in New York instead of going back to school. Meanwhile Paul's parents have a talk with Eric and Annie and decide not to proceed with a lawsuit.
Little White Lies (Part 1)
With marital problems plaguing him, Matt returns to Glenoak for a little perspective, as does Simon, who decides to spend his summer with the family. Simon's return also poses further problems for the fate of Cecilia and Martin, and Lucy thinks Roxanne may be causing trouble by scheming to climb the police ranks above Kevin. Meanwhile, the Camdens learn that Mary's baby will come expected earlier than expected, while Ruthie makes a secret commitment to a foreign exchange student, and Chandler finds a tutor for his son, Jeffrey.
Don't Speak Ill of the Dead or the Living
Annie's half-sister, Lily, shows up to talk to Annie about a serious family issue, but Eric wonders why Annie is so reluctant to deal with her. Peter and Ruthie land in some trouble over a class project, while Cecilia tries to send Tyler's awkward friend, Mac, on a date with a classmate. Meanwhile, Chandler helps advise Roxanne during a personal crisis.
Go Ask Alice
The school board brings in Eric to examine the methods of a high school principal, Ms Jones, when several parents begin to suspect her of using questionable behavior. When a female student goes missing, Eric believes the father, not the principal, is involved. Meanwhile, rumors about Martin begin circulating after Cecilia talks about him to Ruthie.
Lost and Found
Lucy gets jealous when she finds Kevin and Roxanne engaging in questionable behavior during an undercover police assignment. Chandler finds himself in over his head as a newly-minted father, while Martin and Cecilia find that more and more, their personal obligations are keeping them apart. Meanwhile, when Ruthie and Peter miss their school bus during a class trip, a pair of young Sudanese men watch over them until Eric arrives to pick them up.
An Early Fall (Part 2)
Mary returns home to tell the Camdens about her marriage to Carlos, as Lucy and Kevin adjust to their own marriage. With his future uncertain, Simon tells Cecilia he needs some time apart from her, while Chandler breaks up with Roxanne after she tells him she doesn't want to be the wife of a preacher, prompting her to turn to Kevin for advice. Meanwhile, Annie is prepping for an important dinner.
Getting to Know You
When Eric and Annie throw a party welcoming the Dupree family to the neighborhood, Eric is horrified to learn that some people in the neighborhood have issues with the Dupree's Muslim beliefs. After a chance meeting at the party, Chandler becomes attracted to Peter's mother, Paris. Meanwhile, while she attends Kevin's neighborhood watch meeting, Cecilia's house is robbed, and Roxanne begins to suspect a teenage girl she is mentoring may be involved.
There's No Place Like It
Kevin and Lucy bid on a dream house, but soon find themselves doing battle for ownership with the other prospective buyer. Chandler, who wants to provide a home for an adopted boy. The exodus of Kevin and Lucy means that Ruthie must act quickly to claim the empty garage space over Martin. Eric and Annie decide to buy a house too, their own, which is currently owned by the church. Meanwhile, Peter begins to worry about whether his father is secretly seeing another woman.
I Wasn't Expecting That!
A young stranger walks into the Camden residence and hangs around with the family for a day, only he's not a friend of Simon's as everyone assumed. At the same time, Simon, himself, goes unnoticed as he readies to go off to college. Kevin finds himself embarrassed when a woman assaults him during a domestic abuse call while on duty, and worries about the effects it could have on Lucy's attraction to him. Meanwhile, Rabbi Glass stops by to talk to Eric about the possibility of divorcing his wife after spotting her kissing another man.
The One Thing
Matt and Sarah start their first day at the ER and a bad day gets worse very fast. While dealing with an overbearing boss and a patient's unexpected death, Matt wonders if he truly made the right career choice.
Martin gets upset when Eric tries to prevent him from leaving school to take up a professional baseball team's offer of recruitment. Chandler's mother comes to town to assist him with the estate left in his care from his father's will. Meanwhile, Ruthie tries to get Annie to let her and Peter go to a party together.
Little White Lies (Part 2)
Matt continues to sort out his feelings for his ex-girlfriend Heather while figuring out if he can piece his marriage back together. Simon's return continues to put a damper on Cecilia and Martin's relationship, and Ruthie is shocked when her foreign exchange guest seems to find Peter attractive. Meanwhile, Eric and Annie decide to go see Mary and Carlos in New York as Mary has her baby.
Matt comes back to Glenoak intending to celebrate a treasured occasion with Ruthie, but tries to keep from seeing anyone else in the family during a not-so-secret return that has the whole family curious. During her inquiries to the hospital, Annie accidentally reveals to Matt's coworker nurse, Kelly, that he's married to Sarah, while Tyler tries to keep a special secret he plans to share with Cecilia.
