'The Cabin In The Woods' Gets An 'A' For Effort But Falls Short

4/13/2012 4:00pm EDT
Cabin Woods photo
On the one hand I applaud the attempt by both co-writers Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon to reinvigorate the horror genre by mocking certain conventions and creating all new ones. But in its wry attempt to be a step ahead of typical slice and dice fare, "The Cabin In The Woods" at times comes off as too clever and as a result never feels like its letting the audience in on the joke.

The set up is pure "Evil Dead" cabin retro, with four young and naïve kids heading out to an isolated log hut to do a little partying. The initial addition is in the form of a gang of suit and tie desk jockeys w...

Q&A: 'The Cabin In the Woods' Stars Fran Kranz And Kristen Connolly Discuss Joss Whedon And Acting In Horror

4/12/2012 6:00pm EDT
Kristen Connolly
When Fran Kranz and Kristen Connolly first signed on for the Joss Whedon-penned horror flick The Cabin in the Woods, they immediately knew they were going to be part of something special. Helmed by Drew Goddard making his directorial debut, the film tells the story of five college friends who travel to a remote cabin in the woods for a relaxing weekend getaway. They soon discover unimaginable terrors there, and together they must survive long enough to learn the truth behind the mysterious cabin.

Originally shot in 2009 under MGM, the film sat on the shelf for two years because the studi...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'The Cabin In The Woods,' 'Three Stooges' & More

Trailer Talk: This Week in Movies
My high hopes for the fourth “American Pie” movie were dashed after I saw “American Reunion.” There was plenty of 90s nostalgia and some of the trademark humor that you love from the franchise, but on the whole the film was pretty depressing. For more of my thoughts, check out the full review.

Dropping in at the box office this week are the Joss Whedon penned horror film “The Cabin in the Woods,” the modern-day take on a classic comedy trio in “The Three Stooges,” the action packed sci-fi movie “Lockout,” the African American kidnapping thriller “Woman Thou Art Loosed: On the 7th Day,” ...

American Reunion
In addition to interviewing Fran Kranz and Kristen Connolly from “The Cabin in the Woods” last week, I also spoke with author Dana Fredsti about her new zombie book Plague Town, which comes out on Tuesday. We talked about her book, her connection to the cult classic “Army of Darkness,” and about this season of “The Walking Dead.” If you haven’t seen my interview yet, definitely check it out.

This week you’ll have the opportunity to see the “American Pie” gang back together again in “American Reunion,” the college comedy “Damsels in Distress,” the Morgan Spurlock documentary “Comic-Co...

Neil Patrick Harris Loves His Hollywood Star's Location

9/16/2011 8:15am EDT
Neil Patrick Harris
Neil Patrick Harris was thrilled after his Hollywood Walk of Fame star was unveiled on Thursday because the plaque is right outside his favorite trashy bar.

The How I Met Your Mother star was honored with the 2,448th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for his TV work, and his pals Jason Segel and Joss Whedon turned up to support him on his big day.

Harris told the assembled crowd how he couldn't have been more pleased with where his star was placed - right in between Hollywood's Pantages Theater and a drinking den.

He says, "As much of an honor as this is, unfortunately, it won't be t...

At last month's San Diego Comic Con it came as a surprise that one of the biggest superhero movies to be released next year was more or less absent. However, at this weekend's Disney’s D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center a preview was displayed showing what will be in store for 'The Avengers.'

Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, took to the stage to highlight footage of the previous Marvel films, anticipating for the unveiling of the new clip and he confessed that there was only two weeks left of filming.

Could 'Firefly' Return To Television With New Episodes?

2/22/2011 1:00pm EST
Firefly re-runs are back on television - and now star Nathan Fillion may be putting the pieces together to create new episodes of the cult show.

Recently, the Science Channel revealed that it is re-airing the entire Firefly series in its intended order and in high definition (for those of you not in the know, FOX originally aired the episodes without any consistency). The Science Channel will be bookending each episode with additional content from Dr. Michio Kaku, who will discuss the theoretical science behind the show.

Entertainment Weekly asked Fillion, who played Mal on the short-live...

Nicholas Brendon: 'Buffy Remake Is A Mistake'

12/16/2010 9:44am EST
Nicholas Brendon
Buffy The Vampire Slayer star Nicholas Brendon has become the latest former cast member to criticize plans for a big screen reboot of the hit TV show, branding it "a mistake".

The long-running series, which began as a 1992 film starring Kristy Swanson, is being re-imagined for a movie adaptation, with a new actress playing the cheerleader-turned-vampire hunter portrayed by Sarah Michelle Gellar on TV.

However Brendon, who played Xander Harris on the show, is worried the film will not find the same fan base as the TV phenomenon gained.

He tells E! News, "I think it's a mistake. They ha...

No 'Avengers' For Gwyneth Paltrow

12/14/2010 8:10am EST
Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow has confirmed she's been left out of The Avengers movie, insisting studio bosses "would have asked by now" if they wanted her to take part.

The upcoming superhero blockbuster, written and directed by Joss Whedon, will feature a star-studded cast with Robert Downey, Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk and Chris Hemsworth as Thor, while Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury.

Paltrow has played Iron Man's assistant and love interest Pepper Potts in two installments of the hit franchise, and she had been expected to make a...

'Walking Dead' Recap: 1x05 - 'Wildfire' Builds Suspense, Leaves Us Hanging

11/29/2010 9:50am EST
zombie killerrr
When we left our plucky Southern zombie fighters, they were reeling in the aftermath of a surprise zombie attack. We rejoin them in episode five, “Wildfire.” Rick is on the radio with Morgan (the man from the pilot who first helped Rick). I hope that this means he will come back, because he and his kid were pretty awesome.

Andrea has a sad moment with Amy’s body, reminding everyone that, oh yeah, we’re in the middle of a zombie apocalypse and someone is going to have to chop off Amy’s head or something so that she doesn’t rise up and kill everyone. Unfortunately, everyone is tip-toeing...

Kristy Swanson Wants To Be In 'Buffy' Revamp

11/24/2010 9:17am EST
Kristy Swanson
Original Buffy The Vampire Slayer Kristy Swanson wants a bite of the franchise's next revamp - despite creator Joss Whedon publicly denouncing the project as "a sad, sad reflection on our times."

The actress is best known for playing Buffy Summers in Whedon's 1992 film which spawned the hit TV franchise, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar in the title role. Whedon has blasted plans for a new big screen installment, criticizing studio bosses for failing to come up with fresh ideas.

However, Swanson insists she would love to appear in the reboot, which she believes can survive without Whedon....

'Glee' Creator Ryan Murphy Q&A (Part 2)

8/4/2010 8:59am EDT
Ryan Murphy
"Glee" creator Ryan Murphy attended the Television Critics Association fall press tour and gave fans a lot to think about in the upcoming season. Check out part one of the interview, and read what else he had to say:

Any plans for Emmy night? What are you wearing?

RM: You know, I have no idea what I’m wearing. I begged the other executive producers to all wear track suits and go Sue Sylvester. So far they’re like okay, we’ll think about that. I’m like wait, how did I get so brave. That’s my dream that we would walk in together dressed as Sue Sylvester.

If that doesn’t happen, do you have...

Jennifer Love Hewitt: 'I Am Obsessed With Wonder Woman'

6/9/2010 4:30pm EDT
Jennifer Love Hewitt
Jennifer Love Hewitt is fighting "hard" to land the coveted role of Wonder Woman on the big screen, confessing she is "obsessed" with playing the TV heroine.

Hollywood stars Megan Fox, Eliza Dushku, Sandra Bullock and Beyonce Knowles have all been tipped to take over the role Lynda Carter made famous in the 1970s for Joss Whedon's big screen remake.

However, Hewitt is pleading with movie studio bosses at Warner Bros. to hire her for the part.

She says, "I'm fighting so hard. I think Warner Bros. is getting ready to make Wonder Woman and I really want to play Wonder Woman. I am obsesse...

Marvel And DC Comics Will Be Slugging It Out On The Big Screen For Years To Come

5/5/2010 10:06am EDT
Marvel And DC Comics Movies
With Iron Man 2, Kick-Ass, The Losers and Jonah Hex all hitting the multiplex this summer, the onslaught of comic book movies shows no signs of slowing (for better or worse). Leaving the Green Hornet (who started as a radio show) and Scott Pilgrim (indie press slacker hero) for later debate, we’ll get you up to speed on the heavy hitters from comics’ Big Two, DC and Marvel that are heading to the big screen in the next few years, culminating (supposedly) in epic team-ups for both universes!

Joss Whedon To Direct 'The Avengers'?

4/14/2010 9:01am EDT
Joss Whedon
Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon is close to signing a deal to direct The Avengers film, according to reports.

Bosses at Marvel have been hunting for a moviemaker to oversee the highly-anticipated superhero outing, which will see Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor and Captain America team up on the big screen.

Iron Man director Jon Favreau disappointed fans last year by confirming he would only be acting as executive producer and not taking full control of the film's direction.

However, Whedon - who also created hit shows Angel and Dollhouse - is ready to sign on to head up the bloc...

Lynda Carter Backs Sandra Bullock For Wonder Woman

3/26/2010 8:32am EDT
Lynda Carter
Original Wonder Woman star Lynda Carter has slammed reports she branded Sandra Bullock "too old" to play the superhero siren in a big screen remake - insisting the Oscar winner would be "great" in the role.

A host of A-list ladies have been tipped to take over from Carter, who starred in the 1970s TV show, in Joss Whedon's movie revival, including Megan Fox, Eliza Dushku and Beyonce Knowles.

However, when Bullock was suggested for the lead, Carter was rumored to have slated The Blind Side actress - insisting a younger star should take on the action role.

Nevertheless, Carter is adaman...

Is Kevin Smith Looking For 'Cop Out' Publicity?

2/15/2010 12:12pm EST
Is Kevin Smith Looking For
Kevin Smith was conveniently kicked off of a flight over the weekend, allowing everyone in America to read his name in a paper or on a blog just in time for his new film, "Cop Out," in theaters February 26.

I'm not saying he got kicked off the flight on purpose, but perhaps his subconscious allowed him to put on the few extra pounds it took to get a pilot all riled up. Smith has flown Southwest before and never had a problem. He is currently challenging the airline to prove that he was really a safety risk, which will cost them a $10,000 donation to charity, should they fail. I would get...

Whedon Gives Satisfying Conclusion In 'Dollhouse' Series Finale

2/1/2010 11:39am EST
Dollhouse finale
Well, here it is. The end of "Dollhouse." Let's talk for a minute about this doomed-to-start-with show. A lot of fans want to blame FOX solely because of how the studio has canceled two of Joss Whedon's shows. They certainly did not give it much of a chance by putting it on Friday at the death slot, but they did give it two seasons and some reasonable marketing to try and get a bigger audience. It never had the ratings, and let's face it, the first season wasn't as good as it should have been. Most of the first episodes were weak, and you could argue that it was from FOX changing Whedon's "...

'Dollhouse' Recap: The Hollow Men

1/18/2010 10:15am EST
There was a bit of exciting news this week for Joss Whedon fans, since it seems he is meeting with FX to discuss the possibility of a show. "Dollhouse" lovers should not get their hopes up; it is not likely to be this show, even if that would be kind of exciting. Fans have always said that Whedon should try cable networks, although Sci-Fi honestly would be the best choice for him. Still, this could mean good things for the Whedonites ... but "Dollhouse" is almost dead. And like the past eight episodes or so, the show enjoys making us regret every second of its demise by being fantastic. And...

'Dollhouse' Recap: The Evil Mastermind Is Revealed

1/11/2010 10:27am EST
Joss Whedon has a fiercely loyal and loving fanbase, and it is occasionally an abusive relationship. He likes to destroy characters that the fans love so the pain is fresh and unique, and he likes to throw twists at us that stab our hearts. It happened all the time on "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," like when Buffy had to stab Angel, or Tara was shot through the window, or in "Angel" when Fred was turned into Illyria or Doyle sacrificed his life, or then in "Serenity" when Wash became a victim of the Reavers, and finally when the only sweet character in "Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" was accid...

TV Wishlist For 2010

1/5/2010 9:30am EST
TV Wishlist for 2010
2009 is officially ending and 2010 is beginning. What this year means for the entertainment world is anyone's guess, but there will probably be some blockbusters, some brilliant indie films, a few surprises and disappointments, and then excitement for the following year. On television there have been some great new shows, such as "Glee" and "Modern Family," and some older shows that are going strong, like "24" and "Criminal Minds." But every once and awhile fans have to think about what little things they'd change in their favorite shows, and here's a look at a TV Wishlist for 2010.

A Starpulse Writer's Pop Culture TV Christmas List

12/19/2009 8:00am EST
Gilmore Girls
Dear Santa:

I don't believe one can ever be too old to believe in the magic and spirit of the holiday season, nor do I believe one shouldn't be able to ask for something they want. After all, if Oprah and The Secret taught us anything, it is that you have to put what you want out in the universe in order to have a shot at getting them. So keeping that in mind, here is my not-so grown-up Christmas list!

Is it just me, Santa, or is it really annoying when a studio puts out the first season or two of a favorite old show on DVD just to see what kind of response it will get but then makes...

Joss Whedon Working Hard To Make Fans Miss 'Dollhouse'

12/14/2009 10:26am EST
You and me are through "Dollhouse." It's not fair that you've become simply awesome now that the show is canceled. Last week was another double episode feature for Joss Whedon's latest creation, and he's working hard to make the audience miss it. Way to make it hurt, Joss. These episodes feature the return of Alpha, Echo's emerging personality, and a tragic possible end to a major character.

Echo is now out in the world on her own, but she is in a doll state and therefore confused and naive. She sees a Mexican woman being refused from a grocery store and steals food to give it to her. T...

New Fall TV: Keep It Or Kill It

fall tv keep or kill
It's that time of year. You've checked out the new shows and by now you know if you love them or hate them. Networks are either ordering additional episodes of their fledgling series or quietly letting them burn off until nobody notices they are gone. And some networks stayed cautiously conservative by looking back to previous television icons and failing miserably (we are talking to you, NBC).

Check out the crop of new series and whether we think they should stay on the air or be put out of their misery. Let us know if you agree!

'Dollhouse' Recap: 'Belle Chose'

10/12/2009 8:35am EDT
Fox has a history of messing with Joss Whedon shows, and while they respectfully gave him a second season for "Dollhouse," they still enjoy mixing up his episodes. Last week's episode 'Belle Chose' was supposed to be the second week, but they pushed it to the third instead. Why? Honestly I have no idea. This is a far superior episode to last week's Crazy Mama scenario, and it makes a lot more sense since it gets into Ballard's trouble with being a handler. What's done is done, but this episode is a sign that the show is picking up.

It starts out introducing the audience to a very creepy...
