Weinstein brothers ordered to enter arbitration talks over The Hobbit suit

February 19th, 2014 3:00am EST
Harvey Weinstein
Movie moguls Bob and Harvey Weinstein have been ordered to meet with an arbitrator in their $75 million (£46.9 million) legal battle over profits from The Hobbit film franchise in a bid to settle the case out of court.

The Weinstein brothers filed suit against executives at New Line Cinema Corporation, part of the Time Warner brand, in December (13), claiming they were owed money from the success of the fantasy series as a result of a rights agreement they signed in 1998.

The deal stipulated that New Line bosses would pay the producing duo five per cent of gross receipts for the rights to...

He explains, "I talk to people about the history of the hobbit... I talk about how the hobbit lives and what they do and their social infrastructure.

Daniel Radcliffe Thinks James McAvoy Should Play Hobbit

August 19th, 2009 10:01pm EDT
Daniel Radcliffe Wants James McAvoy To Play
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe has ruled himself out of a planned Lord Of The Rings prequel - because he doesn't want to play Bilbo Baggins.

The young actor has long been considered the hot favorite to lead the cast of The Hobbit - but he insists the role should go to someone else.

He says, "I'd have to say, 'Thanks but no thanks,' not that anyone has asked me. Honestly, I don't think they would want me anyway; it's just too close (to the 'Potter' franchise). Whatever I do next, I don't think there will be any wizards in it!"

Radcliffe, who is currently working on the final two...

Lord Of The Rings fans will have to wait another four years to get their next big screen fix of the franchise - its prequel The Hobbit has been postponed until 2012.

Lord of the Rings Oscar winner Peter Jackson is producing the project, and he and del Toro will pen the screenplay.

Ian McKellen has already signed on to reprise his role of Gandalf, and Andy Serkis is expected to play Gollum once again.

Shooting was scheduled to start in New Zealand this winter...

Film Review: Reality Trumps Fantasy In 'Spiderwick Chronicles'

February 12th, 2008 5:29pm EST
The Spiderwick Chronicles
The Spiderwick Chronicles may not be in the same fantasy league as the tales of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis and J.K. Rowling. Yet the family flick based on the books of Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black is an all-around class act, even if its world of ogres and goblins is a bit stale in the wake of its more ambitious cousins in the over-the-rainbow genre.

The human characters are the main source of wonder here. Freddie Highmore, Sarah Bolger and Mary-Louise Parker authentically capture the fractured spirit of a family newly cast into single-parent mode, while David Strathairn adds a wistf...

Ian McKellen Eyes 'Hobbit' Role

October 15th, 2007 6:17pm EDT
Ian McKellen
Ian McKellen would be "disappointed" if he could not reprise his role as wizard Gandalf in the movie adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's novel The Hobbit. McKellen, who has appeared in the role in each of the three films from the Lord of the Rings trilogy, is eager to land the part - even though Peter Jackson will not be directing.

He says, "If I am still functioning and working well, it is very likely I would be asked to do it. I am glad to read that it is looking more and more likely. I would be disappointed if they didn't want to have the original Gandalf."

And the Lord of the Rin...

The Lord Of The Rings star Sir Ian McKellen is considering his own involvement in The Hobbit, after discovering Peter Jackson will not direct the upcoming movie adaptation of JRR Tolkien's classic book.

In an email to a fan website earlier this week, Jackson revealed bosses at New Line Cinema had told him he would not be signed to make JRR Tolkien's classic or another The Lord Of The Rings prequel.

Jackson and his production company Wingnut Films are currently embroiled in a legal dispute with New Line Cinema over royalties from The Lord Of The Rings trilogy.
