Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has died at the age of 87. The veteran politician, nicknamed the 'Iron Lady' for her staunch anti-communist stance in the years following World War II, passed away on Monday after suffering a severe stroke.

Family spokesman Lord Tim Bell confirmed the news from Thatcher's son, Mark, and daughter, Carol.

"It is with great sadness that Mark and Carol Thatcher announced that their mother Baroness Thatcher died peacefully following a stroke this morning," said Bell.

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher has left the hospital after undergoing surgery last week.

The 87 year old, who was portrayed by Meryl Streep in 2011 movie The Iron Lady, was admitted to a medical facility to have a growth removed from her bladder on December 20.

A spokeswoman for Thatcher insisted the former politician was "absolutely fine" following "minimally invasive surgery", while her former adviser Lord Bell added, "The operation was a complete success and her condition is satisfactory. Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher is recovering in hospital after undergoing surgery.

The 87 year old, who was portrayed by Meryl Streep in 2011 movie The Iron Lady, was admitted to a medical facility to have a growth removed from her bladder.
