Civil Rights Activists Outraged Over 'Django Unchained' Action Figures

Activists at Reverend Al Sharpton's civil rights group have called for a national boycott of "highly offensive" action figures based on Quentin Tarantino's new movie Django Unchained.

The Western, which stars Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio, is set in slavery-era Mississippi in 1858 and has sparked controversy over the repeated use of racial slurs. A number of action figures based on the movie's characters have now gone on sale, retailing online for $299, and the toys have attracted widespread criticism.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs was honored by a civil rights organization in New York this week and he used his acceptance speech to praise the group's founder Reverend Al Sharpton for his good work.

The hip-hop star was handed a prize at the National Action Network's (NAN) third annual Triumph Awards at the Lincoln Center in Manhattan.

After he ascended to the podium, Combs took a chance to pay homage to civil rights activist Sharpton, who founded the organization in 1991.

Stevie Wonder and Christina Aguilera paid their respects to Etta James at the blues legend's funeral in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Wonder performed three songs, including Shelter in the Rain, for the hundreds of mourners who gathered at Greater Bethany Community Church to remember James, who died from complications of leukemia on January 20 at the age of 73.

Aguilera performed At Last and introduced her tribute by saying, "Out of all the singers that I've ever heard, she was the one that cut right to my soul and spoke to me. So tonight, Etta, this song is for you."

Sean 'Diddy' Combs, Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Samuel L. Jackson and Will Smith were among the stars who paid their last respects to late hip-hop icon Heavy D at his funeral in New York on Friday.

The veteran MC, real name Dwight Arrington Myers, died last week after collapsing outside his home in Beverly Hills, California. He was 44.

Thousands of fans mourned Heavy D's passing at a public memorial on Thursday and celebrities from the worlds of hip-hop and Hollywood gathered in Mount Vermont on Friday to bid farewell to the star.

Filmmaker Tyler Perry was the guest of honor at the Triumph Awards on Wednesday as he accepted an award from U.S. civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton.

The Madea's Family Reunion director received the Chairman's Award at the New York ceremony, held by Sharpton's National Action Network.

Sharpton thanked Perry for giving a $200,000 donation to the National Action Network and providing work for several African-American actors in Hollywood as he presented him with the trophy.
