Trailer Talk: This Week in Movies - 'Water For Elephants,' 'Madea's Big Happy Family' & More

April 18th, 2011 11:00am EDT
Water for Elephants
This weekend I was finally able to see the Duncan Jones sci-fi/thriller “Source Code,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal. After viewing it though, I’m fairly certain that Hollywood is attempting to compensate for mindless action flicks, by making ludicrously complex and confusing sci-fi movies like “Source Code.”

While the premise of a lone soldier being forced to travel back in time for 8 minutes at a clip sounds promising, the way that the tale is told, does not allow you to get emotionally invested in the characters.

As he did with his debut film “Moon,” Jones adeptly handles themes of isolat...

Tyler Perry Gives Elderly Woman A New Home Following Fire

April 9th, 2011 9:26am EDT
Tyler Perry
Generous director Tyler Perry has gifted an elderly woman with a brand new house after hearing how her family home was burned to the ground shortly before Christmas.

Rosa Lee Ransby, 88, and her seven relatives were living in a rural Georgia town when a house fire broke out in December, destroying all of their belongings.

Perry learned all about the tragic turn of events and was so moved by their plight, he pledged to help the family rebuild, reports the Associated Press.

And the filmmaker followed through on that promise on Friday, when he presented Ransby the keys to a brand new, fully...

Watching Me On TV: Reflections About Blacks in Prime Time Past

February 23rd, 2011 10:40am EST
The Cosby Show
I’m not old, but I am mature. I’m not in the let’s-go-clubbin’-this-Saturday-night set, but I’m still in the coveted demographic that advertisers like. I’m old enough to remember when vampires were scary—not hot. And I do have those wonderful memories of big, boxy television consoles with three major networks and some local stations with really bad programming. Color television shows were a major big deal, so much so that announcers would actually let you know—“The F.B.I.— in color!” That was probably because not a lot of folks had a color TV set. It’s also cool to see how the physical tele...

Is A Big Momma & Madea Team-Up In The Works?

February 15th, 2011 3:00pm EST
Martin Lawrence is back as Big Momma in part three of that trilogy, Big Mommas: Like Father Like Son. Now there’s another famous man in a big lady costume. Tyler Perry’s Madea has been in more films than Big Momma and countless stage appearances. Lawrence said Perry has broached the subject of a team up with him.

"That would be nice,” Lawrence said. “We’ve had dinner before together. I think Tyler did tell me one time, he said he would love to make an appearance in Big Momma. This is what he told me.”

Who would win in Big Momma Vs. Madea? “We wouldn't have them fight,” Lawrence said. “We'...

Oprah Winfrey Talks About Fighting With Stedman, Giving Up Her Purse & Hating Her White Pants

January 10th, 2011 11:00am EST
I got quality time with Oprah Winfrey at the Television Critics Association winter press tour. For the launch of OWN, The Oprah Winfrey Network, Winfrey threw a party in the garden of the Langham Hotel in Pasadena. When she arrived herself, a group of 10 or so journalists gathered around her. Once I managed to introduce myself to her, she grabbed my arm and held it as she answered my questions. That’s got to be the most famous person I’ve ever met, right?

Oprah can hold court anywhere she goes. Her talk show has been so influential over 25 years that it introduced people to spiritual world...

Teen Breaks Into Tyler Perry's Home

December 28th, 2010 8:27am EST
Tyler Perry
A teenager caught breaking into filmmaker Tyler Perry's Georgia home on Thursday has been charged with criminal trespass.

Chloe Ware was caught by the director's bodyguard as she attempted to escape with two associates.

Police are searching for two other suspects, who may have stolen items from Perry's Atlanta-area estate.

Ironically, the break-in occurred on the same day Perry moved an elderly fire victim into a rental home in Georgia. The generous moviemaker has agreed to cover 88-year-old Rosa Lee Ransby's rent for a year - while her burned out home in Coweta County, Georgia is being ...

What's Next For Tyler Perry? Hopefully Not More Madea!

November 27th, 2010 5:41pm EST
Tyler Perry-AGM-014246.jpg
Tyler Perry’s “For Colored Girls” has come and gone. Like most of his work, it was a critically panned, melodramatic, over the top and frankly annoying piece of cinema, but hey, it still made a boat load of cash. After a film like “For Colored Girls” which saw Perry (sort of) stepping outside of his safety zone, the idea of him going back to “Madea”, seems like a step backwards. What should Tyler Perry do next?

Stop directing. Why? Because since 2005 Perry has directed ten films, all garnering pretty low marks both artistically and technically. These films have been panned for stereotypica...

Janet Jackson Will Return To Music Next Year

November 5th, 2010 7:10pm EDT
Janet Jackson
Janet Jackson has assured fans she has not quit music for good - she's planning to hit the studio next year to record a new album.

The pop star has put her singing career "on the back burner" recently to concentrate on her acting work, with roles in Tyler Perry's movie sequel Why Did I Get Married Too? and his upcoming drama For Colored Girls. But Jackson is adamant she's not given up pop for good, and will return to making music in 2011.

She tells Larry King, "Just because I've made two films back to back... it's always been a dream of mine to do something like this, so I kind of put m...

Thandie Newton Says Her Role In 'For Colored Girls' Made Her Feel Possessed

November 5th, 2010 10:47am EDT
Thandie Newton-CSH-058287.jpg
Actress Thandie Newton, who has starred in dramatic films such as "Crash" and "Pursuit of Happyness", admits that her role in the highly anticipated film "For Colored Girls", is one of the most challenging roles that she has had so far.

In the dramatic film the English actress plays a rebellious and promiscuous bartender, which she says made her feel vulnerable and uncomfortable. Thandie told Comingsoon.net the following:

"I felt like I was possessed … I felt uncomfortable exploring this sexually-depraved, mean, negative energy. I really felt very vulnerable because it’s so not who I am, ...

Review: 'For Colored Girls' Would Have Been Better Suited For The Small Screen

November 3rd, 2010 10:00am EDT
Four Colored Girls
A good movie either needs the big screen, the big budget, or big stars to be worthy of an audience as large as Tyler Perry's. “For Colored Girls” would make a wonderful first season of a cable (or TBS) drama.

Tyler Perry's "For Colored Girls" is one of those movies that follows interconnecting stories of people going through struggles. The domestically abused, the sexually assaulted, accidentally impregnated, the barren, and hopelessly devoted. Think “Valentines Day” with rape.

The movie is not unlike that of a, or, well, six lifetime films in that it's about women who don't need men. Or ...

Tyler Perry Likes Giving Jobs To Black People, But Says He Doesn't 'Discriminate'

November 2nd, 2010 9:02am EDT
Tyler Perry
Moviemaker Tyler Perry has attacked reports suggesting he only hires African-Americans for his movies, insisting he does not discriminate.

An all-black cast for the actor/director's latest film, "For Colored Girls," was expected, but new reports suggest his entire crew was made up of non-white people as well.

But Perry insists he never sets out to create an all-black working environment.

He tells WENN, "I don't discriminate. I want to know who's the best for the job but I will ask, 'Is there a black person that is just as good?' when we're in the hiring process because it's very importan...

'For Colored Girls' Review: 'Two Jews Are Conflicted Over 'For Colored Girls' (Video)

November 1st, 2010 12:20pm EDT
'For Colored Girls' directed by Tyler Perry is based on the award winning play, 'For Colored girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow Is Enuf'. The film weaves together the stories of nine different women...some strangers, some acquaintances. Eventually, crisis, heartbreak and two horrific crimes bring these women together and they realize that they're not so different after all. Perry has assembled an amazing cast of actresses, including Kimberly Elise, Thandie Newton, Phylicia Rashad, Loretta Devine, Whoopi Goldberg and Janet Jackson. What is it like to be a woman of color in...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'Megamind,' 'Due Date,' & More

November 1st, 2010 9:41am EDT
I’m writing this week’s column on Halloween, so I wish my readers a happy and safe holiday. There are two things I’m looking forward to later tonight: a special Halloween screening of the cult classic “Evil Dead 2” at one of my local theaters and the premiere of the AMC television show “The Walking Dead.” As a zombie aficionado I’m curious to see how they will be able to stretch out the concept into an entire series. I’m hopeful that it will be entertaining.

Arriving this week in theaters are the Will Ferrell animated comedy “Megamind,” the roadtrip movie “Due Date,” the true life thril...

Janet Jackson: 'I Was An Actress First'

October 26th, 2010 4:34pm EDT
Janet Jackson
Janet Jackson is fighting back against fans who have accused her of dropping music for movies - because she worked as an actress years before landing her first record deal.

The singer has been showing off her acting skills in recent years, including roles in Tyler Perry's movie sequel Why Did I Get Married Too? and his upcoming drama For Colored Girls. And while the Nasty hit-maker is adamant she will return to music, she's reminding critics she got her first taste of fame with a role in 1970s sitcom Good Times - not with a record contract.

She says, "A lot of people feel I've given up ...

Tyler Perry Opens Up To Oprah About His Childhood Rape Story

October 19th, 2010 8:14am EDT
Tyler Perry
Moviemaker Tyler Perry choked back tears on a recent Oprah Winfrey Show taping as he recalled his abusive upbringing in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The actor/director went public about his awful youth for the first time in a series of posts and musings on his website last year - and only now is he brave enough to talk about his brutal past.

In his interview with pal Winfrey, which will air on Wednesday , Perry struggled to compose himself as he talked about the day he "died" when he was first raped by a member of his family. The mogul recalled being beaten and sexually abused by a male and ...

Mariah Carey On Pregnancy: 'When The Time Is Right, Everyone Will Know'

August 26th, 2010 2:52pm EDT
Mariah Carey has hinted there's truth behind reports she is expecting her first child with husband Nick Cannon, confessing she's too "superstitious" to share any baby news right now.

Speculation has followed the couple since Carey pulled out of a Tyler Perry movie over mysterious health concerns in June, but she's yet to confirm or deny whether she's a mum-to-be.

New photos of the singer performing in Brazil and sporting what looks like a fuller figure raised fresh questions and forced Cannon to backtrack over a recent denial. Cannon told New York's 92.3 FM radio station on Monday: "When ...

Tyler Perry Cleared Of Plagiarism Charges

August 24th, 2010 2:34pm EDT
Tyler Perry
Tyler Perry is breathing a sigh of relief after a U.S. appeals court cleared the filmmaker of accusations he stole the idea for his movie "Diary Of A Mad Black Woman."

Donna West's case against the actor/screenwriter was dismissed two years ago after jurors in a Texas court found she did not have enough evidence to support her claim that Perry lifted material from her play, "Fantasy of a Black Woman," to use in his 2005 blockbuster.

The playwright launched an appeal against the verdict but on Monday, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled there was no improper conduct in the trial, a...

Tyler Perry Can't Wait To Retire Madea Character

August 23rd, 2010 2:27pm EDT
Tyler Perry can't wait to retire his movie matriarch Madea, insisting he "doesn't get" what audiences love about her.

The actor shot to fame as the sharp-tongued grandmother in movies including "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" and "Madea Goes To Jail" - but he admits he's ready to quit cross-dressing for the role.

He says, "I resented the fact that she became so famous and so many people loved her, because I just didn't get it, and I did not get her. But these days grandmothers are much younger, and much busier. Back in the day, there were grandmothers who would be there for you, give you cou...
