'Top Gear' (USA) Recap: Airport Mayhem In 'Big, Bad Trucks'

November 19th, 2013 10:08pm EST
Top Gear USA
Following their evaluation of American supercars, Team Top Gear moves on to trucks. Adam, Tanner and Rutledge are testing a trio of luxury pickups by (say it with us) putting them through a series of challenges.

Their designated meeting point is in the San Gabriel Mountains. Rutledge has chosen a brand-new Toyota Tundra, Tanner goes for the Ford F-150, and Adam brings a Dodge Ram - pretty much the cross-section of trucks you'd expect. Shocking no one, they want to race these behemoths right from the start. A five-mile sprint from their starting location to the road five miles away ends wit...

'Top Gear' (USA) Recap: Sneaking Around In 'Electric Cars'

November 6th, 2013 8:28am EST
Top Gear USA
Now that our Top Gear hosts have been deported back from Canada, it's time for them to turn their attention to electric cars. It's the usual shenanigans: show up in a locale (this time it's Michigan) with three different rides, put them through a series of challenges, and then the winner (probably Tanner) gets to drive some awesome, tangentially related supercar.

There's the Fiat 500E for Adam, the Nissan Leaf for Rutledge, and the Ford Focus Electric, which unsurprisingly goes to Tanner because he drives a Ford Fiesta on those days when he's obliterating other racers. While Rut is confuse...

'Top Gear' (USA) Recap: 'Can Cars Float?' Not Necessarily

October 29th, 2013 10:04pm EDT
Top Gear USA
After surviving their trip to Sturgis, the boys of Top Gear are back and posing an important question: "Can cars float?" Not well, if you ask the hosts of the UK version, who famously tackled amphibious cars not once, but twice. But that's not going to stop our guys from giving it a similarly well-intentioned but disastrous go.

Starting in Buffalo, New York, they must first pick their rides to be transformed. Adam is looking for toughness, so he selects a Jeep Wrangler. Rutledge opts for a Volkswagon Cabrio, because a convertible means he won't be stuck in there if the thing sinks. He read...

'Top Gear' (USA) Recap: Wasted Barbecue and Falling Stigs

September 25th, 2013 9:31am EDT
Top Gear USA
This week on Top Gear, it's go big or go home, literally. Adam Ferrara. Rutledge Wood and Tanner Foust are in Memphis, on the hunt for some very large vehicles. And when they find them, shenanigans will naturally ensue.

Rut, who has decided to wear pink shorts, is driving a Chevy. Adam, who's wearing the same shirt he's worn in at least fie other episodes, has a Buick. And Tanner's got a Lincoln, the biggest and heaviest of the bunch. After the good-natured mockery is out of the way, the guys are tasked with driving from Memphis to Nashville, with of course a few challenges along the way, ...

'Top Gear' (USA) Season 4 Roundtable: What's Next?

September 3rd, 2013 12:10pm EDT
Top Gear USA
It's that time again: Top Gear USA is revving its engines, and we're going along for the ride. Last week BFTV snagged some face time with hosts Adam Ferrara, Rutledge Wood and Tanner Foust to find out what they could tell us about Season 4. Read on to discover what you can expect!

Tonight's premiere is called "Coast to Coast," so you can figure out the mission. But as always with Top Gear, it's less the destination and more the journey. What can we expect on the guys' cross-country adventure? "That was a really, really ambitious trip. We were flying across the country," said Rutledge.

"We...

Tanner Foust: On Track With 'Top Gear's' Ace

August 5th, 2013 12:21pm EDT
Tanner Foust
They don't make people much cooler than Tanner Foust.

As one-third of the hosting trio on History's Top Gear, he provides the speed and style, whether he's driving a sharp new sports car, a bus or a cringe-inducing Yugo. Yet that's just his side gig. Tanner's day job is being one of the elite auto racers in the world. He holds a pair of world records, is a two-time champion in both Global Rallycross and Formula Drift, and has multiple X Games gold medals. And when he's not doing that, he's done stunt work on such blockbuster movies as Fast & Furious and The Bourne Legacy. Basically, if it'...

Top Gear USA
The Top Gear season is over already? What? Yes, Virginia, it's that time again - but at least Adam Ferrara, Tanner Foust and Rutledge Wood are going out big. They're not even in this country.

They're in Iceland, to be specific, with Adam and Tanner delivering a suitably dramatic introduction to their last shenanigans. They've all bought the best American trucks they can find, and are tasked with seeing which one can best survive this international expedition. Tanner arrives with a Ford Bronco, Rutledge and his International Scout will never get lost in a crowd because they're both bright o...

'Top Gear' (USA) Recap: 'Minnesota Ice Driving'

March 26th, 2013 10:01pm EDT
Top Gear
As if Mammoth Mountain wasn't enough, the hosts of History's Top Gear are now going to tackle ice driving in Minnesota, which Tanner Foust describes as "one of the harshest environments in the country." Yep, the producers are really trying to kill these guys.

Trying to identify the perfect winter vehicle for under two thousand dollars, the hosts first have to get their chosen vehicles out from underneath piles of snow. What did they pick this time around? Adam has a Chevy Blazer S10, Tanner a Nissan 300ZX, and Rutledge a Subaru Legacy GT. After the usual round of disagreeing, all three car...

'Top Gear' (USA) Recap: 'Mammoth Mountain'

March 19th, 2013 10:04pm EDT
Top Gear USA
Top Gear likes to go big, and likes to do things the hard way. You had to figure they were going to tackle Mammoth Mountain at some point. Tanner points out that today's SUVs seem to be sorely lacking, and so the three hosts have decided to put them to a serious test: driving from Pismo Beach to the aforementioned mountain. He shows up in a Range Rover, Adam Ferrara gets a Cadillac (because "Adam" and "Cadillac" are always used in the same sentence), and Rutledge Wood rolls up in a Jeep.

After slinging insults and a reference to the Kardashians, the guys race each other to their first pit ...

'Top Gear' (USA) Recap: 'Doomsday Drive'

March 12th, 2013 10:02pm EDT
Top Gear USA
In the great tradition of Top Gear Apocalypse comes Top Gear's "Doomsday Drive." Having been on location while this end-of-the-world challenge was coming together, this is a Top Gear to remember.

Considering there's a whole TV show about people preparing for the apocalypse, this is a perfect challenge for these guys, who haven't met a situation they can't handle (or somehow unintentionally complicate before handling). Cue Tanner rolling up in a massive military vehicle that he is clearly in love with. Unfortunately, it costs a cool $750,000. That's way out of the price range. Time for the ...

'Top Gear' (USA) Recap: 'Taxis'

February 26th, 2013 10:02pm EST
Top Gear
Being a taxi driver is no easy feat. Just ask Richard Hammond, who attempted to do just that in this season of Richard Hammond's Crash Course. Yet that's not going to stop the Top Gear hosting trio from trying. And earning a disclaimer that says "Local authorities monitored the filming of this show. No laws were broken."

Our heroes Adam Ferrara, Tanner Foust and Rutledge Wood are in Las Vegas, as Tanner tells us that being a taxi driver is supposedly one of the worst jobs in the country, partly because of the cars they're stuck with. It's therefore up to Adam, Tanner and Rutledge to fix th...

'Top Gear' (USA) Recap: '150 MPH Challenge'

February 19th, 2013 10:01pm EST
Top Gear
How cheaply can you get to 150 MPH? That's what the guys of Top Gear are trying to find out with some inexpensive 1990's vehicles.

They're in the Mojave Desert to answer this question. Adam Ferrara picks a '95 Pontiac Trans Am, while Rutledge Wood sides with a '94 Infiniti Q45 he's armed with nitrous (what?), and Tanner Foust selects a Saab 9-3 Viggen that he's coordinated with his outfit. Before they can try reaching 150, though, they've got a series of other challenges to go through first.

The first is racing a flaming arrow to save one of their prized personal possessions...which the p...

Celebrity Valentines for 2013

Ah, Valentine's Day. It's a holiday all about love. While it's generally taken to be reserved for that special someone in your life, there are other kinds of love, too - like showing some love for your favorite celebrities. Here's BFTV's list of the celebrities I've fallen in love with and why I want to give them a little extra appreciation this year. Not only are they talented at what they do, but they're also pretty fantastic people.

'Top Gear' (USA) Recap: 'RVs'

February 12th, 2013 10:05pm EST
Top Gear
After finding America's toughest car, the hosts of History's Top Gear are taking on one of the UK show's more outrageous challenges: making motorhomes. If you expect this to go well, you're watching the wrong show.

Tanner informs us via voice-over that RVs are expensive, and so they decided that they ought to make ones that are both cheaper and fun to drive. His idea of this is of course, one that goes fast and drifts, so he brings us a 1983 Porsche with a giant rocket strapped to it, "because that is awesome."

Adam's response to this is a 1973 Buick that he's put a replica of New York Ci...

'Top Gear' US Recap: 'Monument to Moab' (Fall Finale)

Top Gear
Just when we were really getting into the shenanigans, Top Gear is taking some time off. It's the mid-season break - but not to worry, because Adam, Tanner and Rutledge are going out in a big way (you expected anything else?) by putting some rental cars through things they were never intended for.

The boys have to drive 130 miles from Monument Valley to Moab, Utah in three different categories of rental cars - bought by the show, because no rental company would be crazy enough to rent cars for anything like this. Rutledge gets a bright yellow Yaris, Tanner has a Lincoln Town Ca...

'Top Gear' (USA) Recap: 'Cult Classics'

Top Gear
I'm a little bit partial to this week's episode of Top Gear, being that it was shot in my neck of the woods. The only thing more fun than watching automotive mayhem is watching it when you know where it is they're destroying.

The aim of this week's episode is for the hosts to take three cars which were commercial failures and try to turn them into cult classics in my hometown of San Diego, which is apparently a huge used-car market. Rutledge is first to show up, behind the wheel of a 1992 Subaru SVX. Tanner brings a bright-red 1986 Merkur XR4Ti (say that three times fast), and then there...

Once upon a time, Top Gear put Jeremy Clarkson in a Peel P50 and it was one of the greatest clips ever made. This week, the American incarnation somewhat follows suit by asking its three presenters to compare diminutive vehicles, which is both hilarious and somehow, slightly mean. If anything, we learn that you should never turn your back on Tanner Foust.

After last week's trip to Detroit, the action is now set in New Orleans. Adam brings a yellow Fiat, which he refers to as a "jumbo shrimp"; a less excited Tanner is driving a Smart Fortwo, and Rutledge arrives with a Scion iQ. ...

'Top Gear' (USA) Recap: 'Police Cars'

Top Gear
It's time for more automotive mayhem! The season premiere of Top Gear begins in Detroit, which Adam tells us is the home of the trusty Ford Crown Victoria, the preferred vehicle of law enforcement agencies everywhere. The Crown Vic's been discontinued by Ford for a little while now, so our guys are out to retire it properly and find the best successor. It takes maybe five minutes for the shenanigans to start.

Testing a trio of Crown Vics, Adam calls the episode the first time he's ever sat in the front of a cop car, which is not that hard to believe. This is seconds before The St...

Hide your car keys: tonight marks the third-season premiere of History's Top Gear, bringing back hosts Adam Ferrara, Tanner Foust and Rutledge Wood for more automotive shenanigans. It's taken them a little time to find their footing, but these guys have proven that they're just as fearless (or some would say reckless) as their British counterparts.

Last season we saw Adam get the middle finger from Cloris Leachman and Rutledge flipping a racing truck, just to name two of the things they were subjected to. One can only imagine season three will be bigger and more hazardous to their ...

The Hamster Who Ruled The World: A Conversation With 'Top Gear's' Richard Hammond

Richard Hammond
When I get word that Richard Hammond wants to speak with me, I'm stunned. I'm to be on the phone with one of Britain's most loved TV personalities, one of my idols...and I've just seen film of him crushing a Porsche with a tank.

Calling Hammond just a TV presenter would be like calling Cal Ripken Jr. just a ballplayer. He has hosted enough television programs that he should probably have his own channel. He's best known for a decade of co-hosting Top Gear, but has also been seen on shows like Brainiac, Total Wipeout, and multiple series that bear his name, including Richard Hammond's Fiv...

Let's accurately re-title this episode: "The One Where Rutledge Lands Himself In The Hospital." That's what we're all going to remember about this installment of Top Gear.

After a previous outing where it was all about beating Tanner at his own game, the team celebrates their 25th show by giving Rutledge creative control. This starts with Adam and Rutledge heading out to California for truck-race training. Only one of them can win the open spot in a race the next day. The guys are competitive if not exactly graceful, and Rutledge pulls out the victory. He thinks being a pro truck...

'Top Gear' (US) Recap: Building (And Destroying) Limos

Top Gear
This week on History's Top Gear, Adam, Tanner and Rutledge try to go high-class when they build limos for the Emmy Awards, and fail miserably while we laugh at their pain. Yes, it's another week on Top Gear.

Tanner's limo is based on a 1987 Corvette, because he wants his creation to be "all about performance" and "able to do a burnout." Yep, that's Tanner. Unsurprisingly, it's bright red and only slightly less of an eyesore than Jeremy Clarkson's attempt at a limo. Rutledge calls it "a rolling sauna of exhaust fumes."

Rutledge picks a 1981 VW Rabbit pickup, which he calls "one of ...

Behind The Wheel Of History's 'Top Gear'

Top Gear
"American Top Gear."

It's a phrase that's struck dread in the hearts of many for years. Fans of the hit BBC series - those of us sitting at home with our Jeremy Clarkson books and 'I Am The Stig' T-shirts, and yes, I am one - have heard rumblings about a US import and almost immediately worried one would go south (see: the American adaptation of Coupling, etc.) Yet after a false start (a busted NBC pilot hosted by Adam Carolla), History Channel made the concept a reality two years ago.

And guess what? It's not a nightmare. In fact, it's pretty good.

The cynics - and yes, I was one - are ...
