2/28/2016 11:00am EST
30 Rap Albums That Have Stood The Test Of Time
Rap is one of the newer genres of music, compared to the majority of popular music. Often associated with rebelliousness – violence, drugs, money, sex and the streets – rap has garnered its fair share of controversy throughout its relatively short history. Despite the controversies and criticisms associated with the style, there have been plenty of triumphs – important songs and albums – that have built an illustrious history.

This list examines some of the most important albums in rap’s history – what an arduous task to say the least! Even with fewer years under its belt, there have been ...

Mary J. Blige Leads Albums To Check Out: This Week in Music

12/2/2014 9:56am EST
Mary J. Blige
Back in 2005, one of the holiday season’s smartest album releases was Mary J. Blige’s The Breakthrough. The Breakthrough is considered to be one of the preeminent R&B albums of 00s, no questions asked. Besides its savvy R&B IQ, why was the release so smart? The reason is because it ended up selling 727,000 copies to debut commandingly at #1. Blige has never surpassed or matched those numbers again, but one has to think that she’s a frontrunner among new releases this week with The London Sessions.

1) Mary J. Blige, The London Sessions (Capitol)

The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J....

Wu-Tang Clan Reunites On 'The Daily Show'
All nine members of The Wu-Tang Clan (and a shirt commemorating the deceased Ol' Dirty Bastard) reunited for a rare television appearance last night on The Daily Show.

To promote their upcoming album A Better Tomorrow and their 20th anniversary, Method Man, Inspectah Deck, Ghostface Killah, GZA, and RZA rapped along with the rest of the group members for the song Ron O'Neal, which was released that night on iTunes as the album's first single.

Even Raekwon was there, despite having no verses in the tune and openly explaining his issues with the group's direction on the upcoming album. He...

Rapper Andre Johnson, also known as Christ Bearer of Wu-Tang clan affiliate Northstar, attempted suicide earlier today by severing his penis and jumping off a second story balcony.

Johnson was obviously severely injured, but Los Angeles Police Sgt. William Mann told reporters the rapper survived and is being treated at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

Other members of Northstar tell TMZ they were in the same apartment building at the time of the incident, which happened without warning. They also claimed they were not on "any hard drugs that would cause him to do such a thing."

The other Nor...

Wu-Tang Clan
Someone is willing to dish out big bucks for the one copy of Wu-Tang Clan's new album.

The rap group announced last week they would only produce one unique copy of "The Wu - Once Upon a Time in Shaolin" and auction it off to the highest bidder.

Album features 31 tracks and is kept in a hand-card nickel and silver box designed by artist Yahya. One imagines the box comes with the purchase.

The reason for the single copy? RZA and Cilvaringz write on the project's website, in part, “While we fully embrace the advancements in music technology, we feel it has contributed to the devaluation of ...

The Wu Tang Clan rapper uploaded Destiny Bends to Soundcloud last night with a heartfelt message dedicating the tune to Paul Walker. He wrote, "This song, entitled 'Destiny Bends' was written last night after hearing the tragic news of the loss of a good man named Paul Walker. I met Paul on the set of the film Brick Mansion, where we talked, laughed, and exchanged ideas of life and fatherhood.

"I only knew him personally for less than a year, but we knew each other through our...

Rock The Bells Festival Dates In Washington, D.C. And New Jersey Canceled

9/26/2013 11:30pm EDT
Wu Tang Clan
Producers of rap's Rock The Bells festival have reportedly axed the tour's remaining dates. Shows at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. scheduled for this weekend, and next weekend's dates at the Meadowlands Racetrack in E. Rutherford, New Jersey, have been scrapped over poor ticket sales.

The festival, which kicked off earlier this month with stops in Los Angeles and San Francisco, Calif., featured holograms of late hip-hop stars Eazy-E, who appeared virtually with Bone Thugs N Harmony, and Ol Dirty Bastard, who was digitally featured with the surviving members of his group, Wu Tang Clan.

Tribeca: Beats, Rhymes & Life Of A Tribe Called Quest

4/30/2011 7:40am EDT
Once upon a time, someone in the hip-hop community decreed that Bill Clinton had earned the “Black People Card”. I’m not certain, but it sounds like something Chris Rock would’ve said, so for now I’ll credit him with this. The argument was that Clinton was so cool, so down with black people, that had it not been for the colour of his skin, he’d be considered black on street cred alone. Think of the Black People Card as the Black Amex of the hip-hop community: you can’t apply for the card. If you ask, chances are you can’t afford it. No, you have to be sent an invitation. The hip-hop communi...

1/31/2011 1:08pm EST
Wu-Tang Clan rapper RZA has threatened legal action against The Game in a dispute over a song.

Lawyers representing RZA - real name Robert Diggs - have sent a cease-and-desist letter to the star over a track called Heartbreaker, which RZA produced for The Game's R.E.D album.

The pair was unable to gain permission to use a sample featured in the song and it was removed from the record, although The Game is said to have included it on his Purp & Patron mix tape - which has apparently angered RZA.

The Game tells, "I think RZA (is) tryin' to sue about (Heartbreaker) or somethi...

Where Do Bands Get Their Names?

11/11/2008 11:01am EST
The Band
Sometimes the music doesn't matter. A band that channels the combined genius of John Lennon, Strauss and The Spice Girls can still fall flat with the wrong name. After all, who wants to tell people that their favorite band is called "Truck" or "Lug Nut?" A bad name can kill the potential of any group of musicians. It took more than a few tries to get it right for many of the most popular groups of all time. A few young gents from Britain started off their career calling themselves The Detours and then The High Numbers before ultimately settling on The Who.

Rock history is rife with lor...

Music Is Meant To Be Heard Live

7/28/2008 9:03am EDT
Wu-Tang Clang
At last summer's Rock the Bells, less that two minutes after Wu-Tang Clang busted into their first song, which is to say five minutes after the yo-yo-yos concluded, my dad plopped himself down on the grassy knoll. "These guys suck," he muttered into the tattooed shins of the toking Latino in front of him.

It's not that my pop is the typical old guy who views rap as an example of all that is wrong with the world; he had just nodded along to Cypress Hill several sets before, even mouthing a few choice lyrics to "Insane in the Membrane." No, my dad is just not a fan of live music he can'...

11/9/2007 8:00pm EST
Ghostface Killah

And with the December '06 release of More Fish and Ghost's near-constant touring in '07, his legions of fans have been happily lost in the 'World According To Pretty Toney.' Now, with a new Def Jam album - The Big Doe Rehab - set for release on December 4th, his current tour with Rakim, and a coffee-table book set for release on January 8th through MTV Press, the devoted will be positively delirious.

Method Man Returns With New Album

6/29/2006 10:28am EDT
Method Man
In the dark, womb-like sanctuary of Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady studios in downtown Manhattan—a place that has birthed historical musical moments—sits the artist known as Iron Lung, Tical, Wu Brother #1, Johnny Blaze, and of course...Method Man. With a trusty, half-lit blunt by his side, he is lounging in front of white grand piano, his hands sweeping the keyboards, trying to remember a tune he memorized years ago.

Maybe the idea of one of hip hop's finest—and grimiest—emcees tickling the ivories sounds odd, or out of place, but Mr. Mef has never been the type to fit in. His husky, gu...
