The 25 Most Important Albums Of The Decade

December 23rd, 2009 11:43am EST
Most Important Albums of the Decade
Pitchfork and Rolling Stone and Spin and all those other outlets have their lists of the best albums of the decade, and you know what? I'm going to let them. There's no point in me trying to come up with that list because there were so many great records to choose from. Who's to say that The Strokes' Is This It? was better than Muse's Absolution or any album by Arcade Fire? You can't! You can't! Best albums are invariably marked by an editor's (or staff's) preference in music. But what about qualifying the most important? I can tell you that Bob Dylan's Modern Times was probably the best re...

American Aquarium: Struggles Of A Small Band On The Rise

April 29th, 2009 11:56am EDT
American Aquarium
BJ Barham approached the microphone. With some confidence, yes, but perhaps not what he is used to having. "Hello, we're American Aquarium and we're from North Carolina," he announces with a nervous swagger to the sparse crowd; a statement he would repeat more than a few times this evening. This wasn't a prime timeslot -- Sunday night at 11 pm -- as they are often accustomed to, but, still, it was New York City. Their set would be a good one, though Barham would not think so. So much so that...

UK Experimental Folk/Rock Artist Rose Kemp Brings Her Debut To The US On April 3

February 14th, 2007 11:30pm EST
"I don't have any boundaries and I write for nobody but myself – it's very liberating!" It's just this kind of uncompromising statement that has made Bristol-based Rose Kemp the toast of the U.K. DIY and underground scene. Her U.S. debut A Hand Full Of Hurricanes will touch down in the states April 3.

Recorded in Bristol and Cardiff with producer Charlie Francis (REM, Turin Brakes, Wilco), the disc has already drawn comparisons in the U.K. to PJ Harvey and Regina Spektor. But more appropriately, The Times of London simply christened her, "A huge talent" and The Guardian notes, "Keep an...

Deerhoof
Later on, in the sparkly white jumpsuit days, Elvis would reach a peak moment when the music moved him so deeply, lifted him to such lofty heights, transported him so far from daily cares, that there was only one thing to do: the Inverted Claw. Man, when music makes you do that, it's a truly awesome feeling. And the Inverted Claw is what Deerhoof is all about.

Just when you think you're too jaded to swoon over anything, or clasp your hands to your chest and just smile and say "Yes!" out loud when it gets to your favorite part of a song, well, throw on Friend Opportunity and give it ...
