Steven Tyler Admits Aerosmith 'Said Too Much' In '60 Minutes' Interview

3/16/2012 4:45pm EDT
Steven Tyler regrets some of the things he said about his Aerosmith bandmates in a candid news special on the band, which aired last weekend.

The singer accused his colleagues of riding his coattails, insisting his quest for perfection has helped them all become millionaire hitmakers, while his bandmates opened up about Tyler's cruel and mean tendencies, revealing the outrageous frontman is tough to work with at times.

But the most eye-opening part of the "60 Minutes" expose came when guitarist Joe Perry talked about his own tempestuous relationship with Tyler. The rocker said he tolerate...

'American Idol' Recap: Shannon Goes Home + Power Rankings

3/16/2012 10:00am EDT
Shannon Magrane (center) is eliminated on AMERICAN IDOL
America continues to get it right. One of my big problems with ‘Idol’ is that the voters have a tendency to delay the inevitable. Like with Kristy Lee Cook, or the redheaded guy who looked like me, America seems to want to keep around people with no chance at winning.

That hasn’t been the case so far this year.

First, Jeremy Rosado, the overgrown bundle of nerves went home before he just came out and forgot to sing. This week, the girl who can’t sing, Shannon, mercifully got the boot.

This show is best when it becomes unpredictable, and the only way to do that is to start getting rid of ...

'American Idol' Recap: Joshua Blows Them Away On Birth Year Songs Night

3/15/2012 9:33am EDT
AMERICAN IDOL: Josh Ledet performs
For me, the big story of last night was the ouster of Jermaine. Not his actually being voted off, but the fact that the producers decided to show his receiving the news on the show. People have been kicked off the show before, but nobody’s ever been shown getting the news on the show like it’s an episode of ‘Hard Knocks’ and they’re being cut from the team. So…weird.

As strange as that was, it’s even stranger the person who got kicked off the show because of a criminal record. Would you have ever put the gentle giant in your top ten of having a criminal record? I would have put Phillip (Mo...

Steven Tyler Says He Was 'Hurt' By Aerosmith Snub

3/12/2012 12:31pm EDT
Steven Tyler
Steven Tyler was "hurt" when his Aerosmith band mates failed to check up on him after he fell off stage during a show in 2009, accusing them of snubbing him for six months after the accident.

The singer fell from the stage at a concert in South Dakota and broke his left shoulder, prompting the rockers to cancel the rest of their North American tour. Tyler admits he was high on prescription drugs when the fall occurred and later checked himself into rehab to deal with his problems.

His bandmates were angry with him for ruining their tour plans and Tyler was devastated when no one called ...

'American Idol' Recap: Jeremy Goes Home + Power Rankings

3/9/2012 9:16am EST
American Idol - Jeremy Goes Home
Through one show, I’m just about spot on. Maybe I’m good, or maybe it was just an easy week, but, for once, I completely called the bottom two and even this week’s castoff. Jeremy Rosado became the first finalist voted out, and it almost seemed like a mercy killing. This kid was way out of his depth here and appeared to be a nervous mess on stage. There was no reason to prolong the inevitable and America, and the judges, got this one right.

The rest of the results show was pretty much the standard results show. We got a mediocre performance from Lauren Alaina that once again underscored wh...

Steven Tyler May Be 'Cruel,' But He Got Aerosmith To Where They Are Today

3/9/2012 8:38am EST
Steven Tyler
Steven Tyler insists his meanness and his commitment to excellence have made Aerosmith the rock legends they are today.

In a hard-hitting new TV interview, which will air on news show "60 Minutes" on Sunday, the rocker-turned-"American Idol" judge admits he has been cruel to his bandmates at times - but his quest for perfection has helped them all become millionaire hitmakers.

When newswoman Lara Logan tells the singer what his bandmates said about him behind his back, Tyler accepts their criticisms, but adds, "I'm going to be big-headed right now, OK?. I think my perfectionism and my bus...

'American Idol' Recap: The Top 13 Sing Stevie Wonder And Whitney Houston

3/8/2012 9:38am EST
AMERICAN IDOL: Phillip Phillips performs
Last night was ‘American Idol’s’ 400th show, and in honor of that, I’m going to list the top 400 contestants of all time. In order.

No. That’s not going to happen. But I am wondering where this cast of characters fits in with the other contestant pools from year’s past. There’s kind of a smattering of everything here. You’ve got some soul, some country, some rock/alternative, a nice mix. Normally we’ve seen a lot of pop or rock or something as a bit of a theme throughout the contestants. This year, it’s almost a clash of styles as much as it is singers. Something I think will be very inter...

'American Idol' Recap: Breaking Down The Top 13 With Idol Power Rankings

3/2/2012 10:03am EST
'American Idol' Recap: Breaking Down the Top 13
Let me just start off by saying Enough with the Adele! Enough with the Adele! Look, I like Adele as much as the next guy. She’s got some great tunes on “21”, but after Brielle Von Hugel became the fourth top 24 contestant to sing Adele in three short nights, I’m really beginning to worry that this show is going to become the Adele Hour every single week. I mean on Wednesday two girls sang the exact same Adele song.

Okay, I got that off my chest. The top 13 were chosen last night in an unnecessarily long results show that saw six different contestants sing for their lives. I always like the...

'American Idol' Recap: The Top 12 Girls Mostly Disappoint

3/1/2012 10:00am EST
AMERICAN IDOL: Hallie Day performs
Welcome back judges! After last night, I was worried they were gone. Based on their commentary, there was no difference between any of the guys. If you didn’t watch the show, and just read my breakdown of the judges’ comments, you’d have sworn that Eben and Reed were every bit as good as Joshua. That’s how unopinionated the judges were on the first show.

Last night, they finally came back. It could be because the girls were so horrible. It could be because the producers said, “Hey, this isn’t ‘The X-Factor,’ start actually judging.”

Whatever the case, I’m glad to have them back, because I...

'American Idol' Top 13 Guys Take The Stage With Mixed Results

2/29/2012 9:34am EST
AMERICAN IDOL: Phillip Phillips performs
Let’s face it, we’ve had enough of not hearing anybody sing on this show. Let’s just get right to the recap, shall we?

Random Thoughts Waiting for the Actual Show to Start:

And it’s ‘Idol’s’ new home! Smaller. Less fancy. Cheaper? Budget cuts are coming to TV’s no-longer number one show.

I was hoping Ryan would make some sort of a subtle reference to the Sasha Baron Cohen incident. Maybe say, “It’s a little dusty in here?” Pop a dust cloud out of his pocket? Anything? Nope. Skipped that, but did pop a jab at J-Lo for her Oscar dress mishap. I’m really beginning to think this guy is incap...

Wood Sprites Gave Steven Tyler His 'First Spiritual Moment' As A Child

2/29/2012 8:45am EST
Steven Tyler
Steven Tyler has spent his career trying to re-connect with "the children of the woods."

The Aerosmith frontman and "American Idol" judge reveals he had a spiritual awakening while playing near his home as a child, and it was such a magical experience he has devoted his life to try and find that solace again.

He explains, "I saw this place in the woods where the sun was coming through and I'm walking around with my slingshot at nine years old... It was so quiet in there I thought I heard something called the children of the woods.

"It was my first spiritual moment... and I've always been...

Steven Tyler Assures Fans He'll Complete Aerosmith's Summer Tour

2/28/2012 11:54pm EST
Steven Tyler
Rocker Steven Tyler has assured fans he's fit and ready to tour with Aerosmith this summer - and they should not wait to get tickets for concerts.

The singer famously fell off a stage in South Dakota at the beginning of the band's last summer tour in 2009 and his injuries prompted the group to scrap dates with ZZ Top.

He subsequently quit the band and checked into rehab for a painkiller problem.

But he insists his reputation as an injury-prone, concert-cancelling rock star is undeserved and he's committed to making it through Aerosmith's next tour, which begins in June.

He says, "It's n...

Jimmy Kimmel Lines Up The Stars For Post-Oscars 'Movie: The Movie' Trailer (Watch!)

2/27/2012 4:00pm EST
Movie: The Movie Jimmy Kimmel
A fake movie trailer stole the spotlight from the Academy Awards last night, thanks to Jimmy Kimmel's ability to line up a cavalcade of stars.

In the fake teaser, Edward Norton (playing the world's greatest spy) gets married to the President of the United States (Josh Brolin) in a ceremony ordained by Antonio Banderas.

Colin Farrell is a SWAT officer that has to defuse a bomb with the help of a field goal-kicking canine. Tom Hanks is a robotic lawyer that takes on ornery judge Charlize Theron. Bryan Cranston is a hot dog vendor that seems to always be near an explosion.

Jeff Goldblum i...

'American Idol' Recap: Breaking Down The Top 24

2/24/2012 10:30am EST
American Idol Top 24
Now that we know the top 24 (or at least most of it), it’s time to unleash a new tradition here in my ‘American Idol’ column: The Molly DeWolf Swenson Scale.

For those uninitiated, Molly DeWolf Swenson is the blonde stunner from Harvard who stole my ‘Idol’ heart last year with her dry wit, excellent voice and ability to never appear on the show (Totally playing hard-to-get). This caused her to become my favorite contestant ever, and, as my luck would have it, get voted off before the Top 24.

That year, I decided I needed a new favorite to cheer on for the rest of the show, and decided to ...

Joe Perry To Pen Autobiography

2/24/2012 8:12am EST
Joe Perry
Veteran rocker Joe Perry is set to lift the lid on his time in Aerosmith in a new book.

The guitarist is putting pen to paper to document his life story in a new autobiography and he started work on the project this week.

Perry announced the news to fans on but has yet to reveal any more details about the book.

In a post on the site, he writes, "Officially started writing my biography (sic) this week. More info to come soon re: publisher, tentative release date, etc..."

The rocker will be the third member of the legendary band to write an autobiography - frontman Steven ...

'American Idol' Reveals First Group Of Semifinalists

2/23/2012 9:41am EST
'American Idol' Reveals First Group Of Semifinalist
I guess singing doesn’t really matter anymore? For what seems like the 47th straight night, ‘Idol’ basically put the actual singing on the back-burner last night for an incredibly long introduction to the potential top 24 and a whole lot of sitting in a darkened room.

Yes, there were some snippets of performances, but that was about it. Mostly it was talking, sob stories, and the judges judging things we didn’t get to see much of. I’m starting to wonder if the ‘Idol’ of the title is the person who talks in the confessional booth the best.

Of course, singing is just around the corner, now ...

'American Idol' Recap: 50s Night In Vegas

2/17/2012 9:33am EST
American Idol Night in Vegas
‘American Idol’ went back in time last night with a trip to the 50s for Vegas Night.

It’s always such an odd choice to me when they do these sorts of nights. After all, we constantly hear the judges begging artists to be current. Continuously, we here that the show is desperate to create a star for right now. And, as the demographics for this show seem to slip older, we hear that ‘Idol’ itself is desperate to get young.

Why then did they decide to take it back to the fifties with first-season ‘American Bandstand’-style performances? It was a completely contradictory night. Seeing the hope...

'American Idol' Recap: Group Night, Solo Night And Three Rooms All In One

2/16/2012 9:28am EST
American Idol
It was an ‘Idol’ overload as the show crammed three mainstays into one mammoth episode. We got basically the full run of Hollywood week. The group round, the individual performances, and the “three rooms” format were all on display after last week’s first-half nonsense of no singing.

So how did it feel? A bit overblown. I’m not sure why they decided to cram all this together like this when it would have been so easy to just give us the normal full group show last week and then split it into the individual show this week, but here we are.

And while we’re here, let’s doll out our first-ever ...

Steven Tyler Auctioning Off Elton John Oscar Party Invitation

2/10/2012 4:15pm EST
Steven Tyler-PRK-032194.jpg
Aerosmith rocker and American Idol judge Steven Tyler is offering up the chance to be his date at Elton John's upcoming Oscars party in Hollywood.

The highest bidder of the Charity Buzz auction will dine with the rocker at his table at the glitzy bash on February 26.

The winner will enjoy a cocktail reception, dinner prepared by celebrity chef Cat Cora and a performance by rockers Foster The People at the event hosted annually by the Rocket Man and his partner David Furnish.

The invitation is expected to raise $25,000 for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

'American Idol' Recap: Divas, Tears And The Flu During The Group Round

2/10/2012 9:18am EST
American Idol Group Round
Last night, ‘American Idol’ started off just like an episode of ‘The Killing’: We got the resolution to a cliffhanger that didn’t relate to the rest of the previous episode. It turned out that the cliffhanger was completely anti-climactic. Then the show moved on like nothing happened.

It’s kind of crazy that the ‘Idol’ producers decided to use the well-being of a 16-year-old as a dramatic device in this way, but I guess this is where we are in reality TV at this point. I’m not saying they shouldn’t have shown it, they just could have told us last night if she was okay or not, rather than u...

'American Idol' Round 1 Of Hollywood Week: Who's In, Who's Out, Who Fell Off The Stage

2/9/2012 9:59am EST
Simone is helped off the stage after fainting during her perform
Going into 'American Idol' Hollywood week, I’m faced with two questions:

1) Exactly how many of those wake up scenes were staged? I mean the second girl woke up with lipstick, eye shadow, mascara and earrings on. Are we to believe she just happened to be sleeping like that the night before her mother came in and “surprised” her with an ‘Idol’ wake up call? I smell a rat.

2) Why exactly did the crows explode into spontaneous applause at Steven Tyler’s opening motivational speech that sounded like Dr. Seuss decided to write a children’s book the way William S. Burroughs wrote “Naked Lunch...

'American Idol' Makes Final Stop In St. Louis For Auditions

2/3/2012 9:42am EST
AMERICAN IDOL: St. Louis contestant Johnny Keyser
All right, kids. Here’s the skinny: It’s midnight on the West Coast. I just got back from a night of doing comedy shows (and celebrating said comedy shows) in Hollywood, and I’m all settled in to do this recap.

In other words, things are about to get real. I’m talking really real. I’m talking Simon Cowell with hemorrhoids level real. I’m talking Walter, that cranky cabbie at the beginning of the show, level real.

No bad auditioner is safe. No good auditioner is safe. Hell, I don’t even know if Molly DeWolf Swenson is safe.

Let’s get to it. Shall we?

The Three Best Auditions:

3 - Rachel...

'American Idol' Portland Provides Some Of The Worst Auditions Of The Year

2/2/2012 9:58am EST
Portland contestant Britnee Kellogg
Okay. I’m going to admit it. I’m rushing through this beginning to get to tonight’s episode of “The Challenge”. But can you blame me? I mean Wes is trying to be smart, CT is ready to blow and Jasmine is already the ultimate wild card.

Exactly, I can’t waste any more of your time as you try to catch up with it on Let’s get to the ‘Idol’ Recap!

The Four Best Auditions:

4 - Britnee

This is the former basketball wife who decided to go ahead and let loose her entire history of personal problems to the judges. Good, but pretty ordinary. I’m only mentioning her because of what happene...

'American Idol' Recap: An Old-School Audition Show In Houston

1/27/2012 9:41am EST
Skylar Laine
Last night we got an old-school ‘Idol’ audition show with the sob stories, bad auditions and performances from the judges that made this show the (almost former) number one show on television.

Nothing seemed processed last night. In recent years, everything has been so telegraphed on these results shows. You know the good. You know the bad. You know it all as soon as they enter. Even worse, you know just how good or bad each is going to be and exactly how the contestants will go about proving this.

Last night, all bets were off as we got some of the most earnest bad performances ever on t...

'American Idol' Recap: A Lot Of Good And A Lot Of Bad In Aspen

1/26/2012 9:29am EST
Shelby Meredith
We’re four episodes into this season of ‘American Idol’ and I’m extremely confused about something. Something so confounding to me, that I really need it explained.

Why do girls seem to find Steven Tyler attractive?

I do not understand this at all. My friend Mark asked me during the commercials on football a few weeks ago when they added an Asian woman to the cast. He was referring to Tyler. A sex symbol apparently.

I understand that he’s a rock star and that rock stars could look like me and multitudes would still swoon over them, but doesn’t there have to be a breaking point? Isn’t the...

Liv Tyler Records INXS Cover For Givenchy Ad

1/24/2012 2:19pm EST
Liv Tyler
Actress Liv Tyler is following her father and stepfather into the music business after recording a cover of an INXS tune for a new Givenchy advertisement.

The 34 year old admits she grew up dreaming of chart success but appearances in her dad Steven Tyler's Aerosmith videos led to more on screen time and less in the studio.

But now she's tackling music at last, telling, "I got to record a cover of INXS' I Need You Tonight for a Givenchy commercial. It was fun and terrifying and wonderful. I always thought when I was a little girl that I'd be a singer. My mom (Bebe Buell) was ...

Steven Tyler's National Anthem At New England Patriots Championship Game - Bad Or Good? (Video)

1/23/2012 2:02pm EST
Steven Tyler
American Idol judge and lead singer for Aerosmith - perhaps the biggest rock band to come out of Boston - Steven Tyler belted out the National Anthem before Sunday's AFC Championship game between the New England Patriots and Baltimore Ravens - but... was he a little pitchy, dog?

Decked out in a fur-lined leather jacket & sparkly Patriots scarf, the hometown hero seemed a little more Roseanne Barr than "Sweet Emotion" - but you can probably chalk that up to old age - after all, the guy's 63.

FOX Sports columnist Jason Whitlock even threw in his two cents afterward, Tweeting, "Steven Tyler ...

'American Idol' Recap: The Best And Worst From The Post-Football Show

1/23/2012 9:15am EST
American Idol season 11
I’m not sure how I feel about these ‘Idol’ shows after Football.

Three problems:

One – If you’re on the East Coast, you end up staying up until almost midnight to watch ‘Idol’. Isn’t this supposed to be a family show?

Two – If you don’t watch football and set your DVR, it inevitably gets cut off. This show didn’t start recording for a full hour after it was supposed to. That’s a lot of planning.

Three – Being an Eagles fan now faced with the horror of an impending Giants/Patriots Super Bowl, I now must write this column.

Ugh. I’ll give it my best shot. Here we go.

The Three Best Audit...

Jim Carrey's Daughter Jane Competing On 'American Idol'

1/23/2012 8:43am EST
Jane Carrey
Jim Carrey's daughter Jane is setting her sights on becoming the next American Idol.

The new mother was revealed as a contestant on the show on Sunday night when she took part in the pre-taped auditions in San Diego, California.

Carrey performed Something to Talk About in front of judges Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson who all voted her through to the next round of the current competition.

The young singer confessed she has found it hard growing up as Jim Carrey's daughter, stating, "It is difficult kind of growing up in the shadow of something and trying to find your p...

'American Idol' Recap: Pittsburgh Auditions Best And Worst

1/20/2012 9:44am EST
Contestant Reed Grimm on AMERICAN IDOL
Ah, Pittsburgh – land of Steelers, Pirates, Penguins and me for college.

Living in Los Angeles, I’ve become a bit jaded by seeing places I know well on television and in the movies, but there’s something about seeing Pittsburgh on TV that takes me back to a time when I was just learning journalism. Clearly, I’ve put my college learnin’ to good use with this column.

Speaking of the column, I realized I made a gaffe yesterday, when I pointed you to my Twitter feed. You actually have to click on my name at the top of the page and then click the Twitter link from there to find my feed. Or you...
