5/31/2012 8:21pm EDT
R&B superstar Beyonce, rocker Steven Tyler and rapper Pitbull are getting animated for a new out-of-this-world 3D film project by Ice Age director Chris Wedge.

The three musicians have been cast to voice characters in Epic, joining actors Colin Farrell, Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson and comedian Aziz Ansari.

The movie follows the fortunes of a teenage girl who has to save the earth after she is transported into another universe.

Epic will be Beyonce's first new film job since becoming a mother to daughter Blue Ivy in January. She is also due to begin production on Clint Eastwood's upc...

'American Idol' Finale Mega-Diary: A Note-by-Note Account of Phillip Phillps' Big Win

5/24/2012 11:07am EDT
Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez
Welcome to the American Idol finale Mega-Diary! Our annual blow-by-blow recap of what used to be the third-biggest night in television and is now somewhere between the 14th Monday Night Football game and the 15th Monday Night Football game.

But no bother! We’ll press on. And here’s a prediction before the show even starts: The contestants will start singing a song and mid-way through they’ll introduce the original artist to join them onstage. Sorry if I just ruined the show for you.

8:03 – What more could I want to start off the finale than my favorite contestant from this year, Heejun Ha...

'American Idol' Recap: It's Phillip In A Landslide On Final Performance Night

5/23/2012 7:07am EDT
Phillip Phillips performs on AMERICAN IDOL
The joke ever since Simon left is, “What do the judges even do anymore?” Well, tonight that concern was apt. Very apt. Because the judges never spoke. They didn’t break down individual performances. Instead, they simply offered a few half-finished thoughts at the end of the first two performances before finally swooping in at the end.

I’m not sure why we even needed them until the last minute. They should have been trotted out like wrestlers interrupting a match. That’s how useless they were for the first 45 minutes. It’s like they weren’t there.

So without them, it looks like it’s up to ...

'American Idol' Recap: Joshua Ledet Is Out As The Best Contestant Loses Again

5/18/2012 9:12am EDT
Joshua Ledet is eliminated on AMERICAN IDOL
If there’s one thing we’ve learned about ‘Idol’ it’s that the best doesn’t usually win. Last night, the clear standout of this year’s season, Joshua Ledet, was unceremoniously shown the door while waiting on the doorstep of the finale. This after delivering a stellar rendition of ‘No More Drama’ and winning the night last night by leaps and bounds.

Blame going first. Blame the voters’ apparent detest for soul music. Blame Joshua’s being too old school for the show’s demographic. Whatever the reason, Joshua won’t compete in the finale and join the long line of ‘Idol’ losers who were actuall...

'American Idol': Phillip And Joshua Are The Standouts Of The Final Three

5/17/2012 10:15am EDT
The Final 3: L-R: Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez and Josh Led
Finally, the producers find a way to fill time that’s actually worth mentioning. Traditionally, we’ve saved the big homecoming clip packages for the final three results show, but with two hours to fill (instead of the typical 90 minutes) the producers shrewdly moved those fun packages to the performance show.

I think this worked a lot better because there’s always some sadness, some trepidation, some fear on the results show since somebody is about to get voted off. It’s hard to get in the full celebratory mode of these packages. They just work better on the fun performance show where ever...

'American Idol' Recap: Hollie Cavanagh Goes Home + Final Three Power Rankings

5/11/2012 10:03am EDT
Hollie Cavanagh is eliminated on AMERICAN IDOL
Every year there’s a lurker. That one contestant that you think is going home each week but somehow, improbably, outlasts several other potential favorites and ends up around way longer than you ever expected.

This year, it was that little singling pixie, Hollie. Week-after-week she was in the bottom three. We heard her called stiff, wooden, emotionless and overly technical. All cold qualities that usually do a singer in with a voting public. They want somebody they can love through their performances, and Hollie didn’t really put off that vibe.

Still, despite that, she hung around. And s...

'American Idol' Down To Three After Hollie Cavanagh's Dismal Bonnie Raitt Cover Does Her In

5/11/2012 12:33am EDT
Holly Cavanagh
Hollie Cavanagh couldn't make America love her.

The 18-year-old McKinney, Texas, native received the fewest number of votes on this week's American Idol and was sent home Thursday night.

Hollie's lacking performance of Bonnie Raitt's breakup ballad "I Can't Make You Love Me", which judge Randy Jackson called "the wrong choice at the wrong time", proved to be the budding singer's downfall.

Mentor Jimmy Iovine said Holly "crashed and burned and lost out to those other three singers," chalking up her woes to her lack of having "the personal experience or the professional experience" to take...

'American Idol' Recap: Hollie Stands Alone At The Bottom

5/10/2012 9:24am EDT
Josh Ledet performs on AMERICAN IDOL
Another night. Another ridiculous two duets to save time. Another week of my intro hunger strike against the ‘Idol’ producers for failing to find a more competitive way to round out the show. I think this will be the last week of this nonsense; however, so you should be getting much more of my musings next week. Be afraid.

And…on with the show!

Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Steven Tyler & More Celebs Attend 'Dark Shadows' Premiere

5/8/2012 12:00pm EDT
Johnny Depp
Tim Burton's "Dark Shadows" hits theaters on Friday, and several celebrities attended the red carpet premiere in Los Angeles on Monday.

The film centers on an imprisoned vampire, Barnabas Collins (Johnny Depp), who is set free and returns to his ancestral home in the 1970s.

Depp wore a brown suit that matched his hair, and he accesorized with several necklaces (we can't expect him ever to go the traditional route with a tie.)

Aerosmith rocker and "American Idol" judge Steven Tyler also wore several chains around his neck. But all eyes were drawn to his funky bellbottom pants.

Michelle ...

Steven Tyler Mentors Rock Wannabes At Playboy Mansion

5/7/2012 3:53pm EDT
Steven Tyler
Legendary seducer of women Steven Tyler made his first-ever trip to the Playboy Mansion on Saturday as part of a rock bootcamp program.

The Aerosmith star admits he was too busy "getting high" during the band's heyday to visit Hugh Hefner's iconic home, but he was only too happy to attend the Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp at the venue over the weekend.

Tyler served as mentor to the rock wannabes and tells Rolling Stone, "I just dared them all to learn an Aerosmith song to see how good they can do it.

"If they do it good, which I'm sure they will, I'm gonna pick the best group of them all, w...

'American Idol' Recap: Skylar Laine Goes Home + Final 4 Power Rankings

5/4/2012 11:00am EDT
American Idol - Skylar Goes Home
I guess country isn’t for the whole country. I’ve been working under the assumption all year that Skylar was a real contender mostly due to her musical genre: Country/Western. We’ve seen for the last few years that even the most middling of country singers can make deep runs in this show. (See: Alain, Lauren).

I thought this year, Skylar was set to be that Nashville Nobody, but it seems America grew tired of her amateurish twang after awhile and she bit the dust because of it.

All I can say is, America got it right. Of the remaining contestants (In the non-Phillip Phillips Division, but h...

'American Idol' Recap: Joshua Ledet Stuns Again

5/3/2012 10:03am EDT
American Idol - Joshua Ledet Stuns Again
Until they stop with these ridiculous duets and trios and whatevers that I will not mention any further, I am protesting by not writing an intro. I’m sure you’re heartbroken.

And…on with the show!

Hollie Cavanagh’s First Song: “River Deep, Mountain High” by Ike and Tina Turner

Steven Said: The first time I heard you step out and use your blues.

J-Lo Said: It was a different type of Hollie tonight.

Randy Said: You guys loved it? I loved it too!

The Verdict:

Here’s just a miserable song choice. Hollie decided to go with something upbeat and soulful. Something that requires energy and v...

'American Idol' Recap: Elise Testone Goes Home + Final 5 Power Rankings

4/27/2012 9:10am EDT
Elise Testone is eliminated on AMERICAN IDOL
It’s rare that a contestant commits the three mortal sins of ‘Idol’. In the world of shilling for America’s votes, there are three ways to fall into the doghouse. Three separate kisses of death that have seen many an ‘Idol’ contestant along their melancholy way to the strains of whatever former contestant the producers have chosen for that season.

They are:

Talk back to the judges – Time and time again we’ve seen those that complain go home. It’s always best to just smile and nod.

Pick the wrong song – A surefire way to get voted off. Picking an obscure song, one that doesn’t match your ...

Sick Ryan Seacrest Almost Missed First 'American Idol' In 11 Years

4/26/2012 2:03pm EDT
Ryan Seacrest
Ryan Seacrest is a professional, so viewers probably didn't realize he was sick as a dog last night while hosting American Idol. There was talk that Ryan could miss his first American Idol show in eleven years!

Seacrest reportedly came down with a stomach bug two days ago and had been throwing up ever since. In fact, sources tell TMZ that the host was sporting an IV in his arm. Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe was prepared to step in as host, and even led the dress rehearsal earlier in the day. There was also word that they told Cat Deeley to be on call if they needed her.

That said, Seac...

'American Idol' Recap: Joshua Ledet Brings His 'A' Game On Queen Night

4/26/2012 11:00am EDT
Josh Ledet performs on AMERICAN IDOL
Wither Jimmy? If there’s one thing about this ‘Idol’ season that’s been universally great, it’s been anything involving Jimmy Iovine. He may have been getting his sealegs ready last year, but this year he can almost walk on water with his insightful criticisms, the boffo mentoring segments and his ability to make everybody better.

So why take him out? Why leave him off the show in favor of the ‘Idols’ cracking on each other? I don’t understand it at all. Maybe we’ll find out tomorrow that he was previously committed. And if not, I think the producers need to be committed for taking him off...

Carrie Underwood And Miranda Lambert Dominate 2012 CMT Music Award Nominations

4/23/2012 2:47pm EDT
Carrie Underwood
Country music stars Carrie Underwood and Miranda Lambert look set to dominate the 2012 CMT Music Awards after landing a combined total of nine nominations.

American Idol winner Underwood leads the pack with five nods - her song Good Girl will go head-to-head with Lambert's Over You for Video and Female Video of the Year, and her unlikely duet with rocker Steven Tyler during a pre-Super Bowl party also earned her a mention in the CMT Performance of the Year category.

The Male Video of the Year will be a battle between the likes of Keith Urban (Long Hot Summer), Jason Aldean (Dirt Road An...

'American Idol' Recap: Some Ups And Downs As Joshua Ledet, Jessica Sanchez And Phillip Phillips Standout

4/19/2012 7:16am EDT
Hollie Cavanaugh performs on AMERICAN IDOL
14 songs. 14 songs! By my count, that’s a record for ‘Idol’. Granted, my count includes no research, no basis and really no thought. Just Ryan’s telling me that it’s so.

Still. 14 songs! Not even time for a guest mentor. Not even time for any pre-packaged videos. Not much time for anything other than singing and a cool ‘Soul Train’ tribute. Thankfully.

And We don’t have any time to waste. Let’s just get right to it, shall we?

'American Idol' Recap: Jessica Sanchez Gets The Judges' Save

4/13/2012 9:19am EDT
Jessica Sanchez get saved by judges
This is the reason the judges’ save was invented. I’ve been piping all year that big-voiced singers like Jessica Sanchez always go home in a “shocker.” Every single year we have some major contender who ostensibly steals most shows only to go home early. It always happens and Jessica was the prime candidate in this age of young texting girls not voting for young singing girls.

She was spared though. Gloriously spared. She barely had to sing a note. Now we all get to wait for that moment where she goes home too early again, thanks to the texting girls.

Yes, Jessica’s unfair ouster was the ...

'American Idol' Recap: The Idols Shine With Songs From The Last 3 Years

4/12/2012 9:39am EDT
Hollie Cavanagh, Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez
Let’s get one thing straight. I can’t stand these duets and trios and whatever it is they’re doing. ‘Idol’ is bloated enough with its pre-taped packages, product placements and other nonsense that two hours is becoming drudgery. Now that they’ve added these non-judged little showcases to what is supposed to be a singing competition is a bit of a bloat too far.

So here’s the deal: We’re not talking about them anymore. We’re not mentioning them. Not discussing them. Not spending any time on them.

No, we’re not going to mention Phillip and Elise tarnishing that Gotye song we all love. We’re ...

'American Idol' Recap: DeAndre Goes Home + Power Rankings

4/6/2012 9:00am EDT
DeAndre Brackensick eliminated
When I don’t predict it, I get it right. All year I’ve been saying that each results show would be DeAndre’s last. He never seemed to get traction, he was never very good, and he just didn’t stand out. I never saw him sticking around, yet, every week, he kept surviving.

Well, no more.

Fake Terence Trent D’Arby is finally hitting the road. Which means we no longer have to struggle to understand why J-Lo loves him so much and the other judges tolerate him. I never got DeAndre. I thought he was too young. Too inexperienced. Like he was a kid impersonating a soul singer. Because that’s what h...

'American Idol' Recap: 80s Night Is All About Song Choice

4/5/2012 9:56am EDT
AMERICAN IDOL: Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet
Tonight the theme seemed to be song selection. Steve hammered it home. Jimmy was very concerned with it. It was on everybody’s minds. You’d think with the entire decade of the 80s to choose a song from, it’d be pretty easy to come up with the correct song.

Yet, it never seems to happen. It just never seems to happen. And when it does, it’s an exception to what should be a rule. I’m going to offer an easy primer on how to pick the right song.

It’s very simple. Listen to the track. Does the vocal stand out? Is it ever more about the rhythm, the instruments or anything like that than it is t...

Fan Meets Aerosmith By Hurling Prosthetic Limb Onstage

4/2/2012 9:43am EDT
Aerosmith star Joey Kramer has befriended a one-legged fan who hurled his prosthetic limb onstage at a gig in a desperate bid to meet the band.

The rocker admits he was so impressed with the guy's efforts to get the group's attention he put the leg on his drum riser and then insisted on saying hi to its owner after the show.

He tells WENN, "We were doing a general admission show. Everybody's hands were in the air and about 50 feet back there was a guy literally holding up his artificial leg. I waved at him and he passed it up and we put it on the drum riser.

"A few songs later my tech sa...

The Eagles To Be Honored By Berklee College

3/30/2012 11:46am EDT
Iconic rockers The Eagles are to receive honorary degrees from Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music.

The music school, based in Boston, Massachusetts, has awarded honorary doctorates to influential musical figures for over 40 years, with past recipients including Duke Ellington, Quincy Jones, David Bowie and Aerosmith's Steven Tyler.

This year's honorees are the Hotel California stars, as well as bluegrass singer Alison Krauss and Ethiopian musician Mulatu Astatke.

They will receive their degrees at a ceremony on May 12th at Boston University's Agganis Arena.

'American Idol': Heejun Han Goes Home + Power Rankings

3/30/2012 10:00am EDT
And another favorite goes home. I’ve had such a terrible run with my favorites since I picked Kelly Clarkson as my favorite contestant in the first season. It’s been nothing but disaster since.

In my wake you’ll find the Anoops, the Carly Smithsons and the Gina Glockens of the world. Of course, you’ll also find my favorite contestant of all time: Molly DeWolf Swenson, who didn’t even make the live shows.

Yes, being my favorite has been cursed since I helped Kelly to a win in the first season, and now the end has come for my favorite this year: Heejun Han.

It’s kind of odd timing really a...

'American Idol': The Idols Pay Tribute To Their Idols

3/29/2012 9:39am EDT
Elise Testone performs Whole Lotta Love
Stevie Nicks. Singer. Artist. Legend. Creepiest ‘Idol’ mentor of all time. Stevie brought it all to the director’s chairs for her first stint in the ‘Idol’ mentor role. A lot of singing. Some crying. And an inate ability to make every contestants’ performance and song choice about herself. Exactly what you want from a narcissistic mentor.

But she brought an extra weird creep factor to the recording studio as well. She had the presence of a burnt-out college professor talking about how she was “there man” and the instability of that same professor’s mother.

I really didn’t know what she’d ...

Aerosmith Promotes New Tour - Steven Tyler & Tom Hamilton Ride A Green Trike & Rickshaw (Photos)

3/29/2012 8:34am EDT
Steven Tyler
Aerosmith (Steven Tyler, Tom Hamilton, Joey Kramer, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford) appeared at the Grove in Los Angeles yesterday to promote their new "Global Warming" tour.

Singer Tyler made a grand entrance by arriving in a green tricked out trike. Bassist Hamilton was carried in by a Japanese rickshaw.

The band is hitting the road for the first time since Tyler fell from a stage in 2009 for an 18-date tour with Cheap Trick. The three-month trek will kick off in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on June 16. They've also got a new album in the works, which they say will be out within three months.

Steven Tyler Celebrates 64th Birthday In Odd Beach Ensemble In Hawaii

3/27/2012 12:00pm EDT
Steven Tyler
Aerosmith singer Steven Tyler went to the beach in Maui, Hawaii, on his birthday yesterday. The "American Idol" judge sported blue painted fingernails and toenails, a striped bathing suit, tie-dyed shirt, and straw hat. He accessorized with rings, braclets and necklace.

The singer wanted to do some paddle boarding but decided the ocean was too choppy. He later went out with his family to celebrate his 64th birthday.

Aerosmith is planning an 18-date tour this summer. They haven't toured since Tyler fell from a stage in 2009.

Check out some more photos of Steven at the beach...

The three-month trek will kick off in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 16.

Aerosmith will play their hometown of Boston, Massachusetts on July 17.

'American Idol' Recap: Erika Van Pelt Goes Home + Power Rankings

3/23/2012 9:30am EDT
AMERICAN IDOL: Erika Van Pelt is eliminated
Really, it all comes down to being memorable. Erika was the most non-descript contestant in this competition. Seriously, I didn’t realize she was on the show until every time she came up. Her being announced never elicited any sort of a response other than, “Oh, her.”

It’s tough to make anything last when vague recognition is your only calling card. Her voice was solid, she chose some good songs, she was certainly never bad. None of that matters though. If you don’t make an impact you’ve got no shot in this competition.

Think of all that came before her. The Sanjayas, the Kristy Lee Cooks...

'American Idol' Recap: A Whole Lotta Good On Billy Joel Night

3/22/2012 10:00am EDT
AMERICAN IDOL: Phillip Phillips performs on Billy Joel Night
What matters more? The singing or the preparation to sing? On this show, it seems like the latter is king. What is ostensibly America’s biggest singing competition has transformed this season into America’s Biggest Prep for a Singing Competition. Between the 2-minute coaching session with Jimmy Iovine and whatever half-awake superstar he has manning the director’s chair next to him and now Tommy Hilfiger primping the contestants for no apparent reason, this show has dedicated far more energy to the warm up than it does the act.

It gets a little frustrating for a couple of reasons. One: It ...
