The Grass Roots is a folk rock band that formed in 1966 in Los Angeles, California. The band came together when vocalists P. F. Sloan and Steve Barri decided to start writing songs together for Dunhill Records. The duo recruited Larry Knechtel on keyboards, Joe Osborn bass and Bones Howe on drums. 1965 saw the Grass Roots gain airplay on the Southern California radio stations with their popular song, “Where Were You When I Needed You,” which featured vocalist Willie Fulton of the San Francisco outfit, The Bedouins.
