The Dictators are an American punk rock band that formed in New York City in 1973, and while the punk scene had yet to truly take off, The Dictators paved the way for other New York bands such as The Ramones. Despite being somewhat tongue-and-check in their presentation and not completely taken seriously, critic John Dougan said that The Dictators are "one of the finest and most influential proto-punk bands to walk the earth." Steven Van Zandt called them" the connective tissue between the eras of The MC5, Stooges, NY Dolls, and the punk explosion of the mid to late 1970's."
