The Crusaders are a vocal music group that rose to prominence in the 1970s and were known for their blend of jazz, pop, and soul music. The Crusaders began in 1960 after the demise of the Houston-based groups, The Swingsters and the Nite Hawks. Known as The Jazz Crusaders at the outset, with Joe Sample on piano, Stix Hooper on drums, Wilton Felder on saxophone and Wayne Henderson on trombone, the new band relocated to Los Angeles and began a career that produced more than 40 albums. The group was quickly signed to Pacific Jazz Records, and possessed a sound rooted in hard bop, with R&B and soul influences.
