The Adverts were an English punk band who formed in 1976 and broke up in late 1979. They were one of the first punk bands to enjoy chart success in the U.K., and feature the first female punk rock star. With their raw, enthusiastic immaturity, the Adverts were a bright light in the punk era. Founded by Tim “T.V,” Smith and Gaye “Advert” Black, who later married, the band consisted of guitarist Howard “Pickup” Boak and drummer Lauries “Driver” Muscat. After (barely) mastering one chord, the Adverts began playing at London's Roxy Club in 1976, opening up for Generation X, where they quickly came to the attention of the Damned's guitarist Brian James.
