50 Songs To Celebrate The 4th Of July

7/4/2015 9:00am EDT
Katy Perry
Ah, the wonderful country that is the United States of America – sigh? What better way to celebrate the great USA than through song? Music moves, and these 50 songs – one for each state – should ‘move’ you. Well, maybe not all of them ‘move’ and maybe not even all are celebratory, but these 50 songs should tickle your fancy and potentially beef up your playlist. There’s also plenty of diversity here – veteran artists, obscurer lesser known artists and a variety of genres. So, here goes nothing!!!

But first, how about a little “Fifty Nifty United States”… “From 13 original colonies!”

The Best Music Videos of 2011

12/28/2011 3:29pm EST
The Best Music Videos of 2011
Yes, we get it, music videos have gone the way of the dinosaur. MTV killed them with re-runs of the 'Teen Mom' and 'the Jersey Shore,' sure, but that doesn’t mean they’re not worth watching, entirely. Isn’t that what Youtube is for? So for the first time here we are taking the time to name a few of 2011’s best music videos. Here is a list of five, as well as one deserving of honorable mention.

"Sexy & I Know It"

Sorry for Party Rocking

Redfoo and Sky Blu are back at it again in the video for "Sexy & I Know It," a hilarious clip that features the two members of...

CD Review: Taking Back Sunday - 'Taking Back Sunday'

7/15/2011 10:15am EDT
Taking Back Sunday
Haters, listen up. Taking Back Sunday isn’t Tell All Your Friends – it didn’t have to be, nor should it have been. Sure, the original lineup (John Nolan, guitar, Shaun Cooper, bass) has reunited and Taking Back Sunday stalwarts did the smart and necessary thing by purging all toxins from within its ranks (yeah, you know the names by now), but that doesn’t immediately mean its 2002 again. No, Taking Back Sunday has changed regardless of the familiar faces, a change necessitated by the times, as well as the bands willingness to avoid having history repeat itself. So, again haters, while Takin...

Taking Back Sunday Postpone U.K. Tour Dates

5/8/2011 1:00pm EDT
Taking Back Sunday
Rockers Taking Back Sunday have postponed a string of concerts on their upcoming U.K. tour due to scheduling issues.

The New York band was due to kick off the mini-trek in Norwich, east England on Monday, but the stars have now axed a total of six dates as a result of an "unavoidable scheduling conflict."

The scrapped shows, including stops in Manchester, England and Glasgow, Scotland, will now take place in August and September.

Meanwhile, Taking Back Sunday have moved their performance in Nottingham, England from May 14 to 19 May, and they will honor their gig in London on May 20.

A Conversation With Fred Mascherino Of The Color Fred

6/29/2009 2:05pm EDT
The Color Fred
Taking Back Sunday have long been the kings of the emo scene, due in large part to not only the guitar playing of Fred Mascherino, but also his superb knack for carrying a hook vocally. His pairing with Adam Lazzara produced some of the brightest, catchiest hooks in the business, but no more. Mascherino felt he needed to move on, and move on he did, to his solo project, which he titled The Color Fred, following a vote by his fans.

The Color Fred's debut release through Equal Vision records, entitled 'Bend to Break,' was written entirely during Mascherino's time in TBS, and was only mean...

The Learning Curve: Music To Contemplate This Week

1/29/2009 10:54am EST
New Years Day
(The Learning Curve) There's literally something for everyone's palette. This week is a journey. Hit the dance floor with SS Nova and Blaqk Audio, whip out the air guitar with Lynam, jump in the mosh pit with Demon Hunter and then start singing along with New Years Day.

This week you might see some familiar faces in some of these bands, but still, they are worth a listen. The members that formed these bands sound little or nothing like their old calling cards, so make sure you take the time to listen.

Enjoy my friends.

Music Review: Say Anything's 'In Defense Of The Genre' Satisfies, Challenges Listeners

10/22/2007 3:09pm EDT
Say Anything
Say Anything’s ...Is A Real Boy caught most of the music scene off-guard, despite the buzz rumbling from inside the genre (rock, punk? does it matter?). Full of desperate lyrics that cut into cliques of people and music, frontman Max Bemis poured his life and well-being into the album – he recorded every instrument except drums - and a few years after the album’s release he was admitted into a hospital with bi-polar illness. With the illness mostly behind him, Bemis re-grouped and wrote another giant concept album, In Defense of the Genre.

The only thing more staggering than the two-CD...

5/5/2007 10:30am EDT
Straylight Run
Do John and Michelle Nolan think too much? Straylight Run's sibling front-people - both sing, write, and play guitar and piano, ably enabled in their musical ruminations by bassist Shaun Cooper and drummer Will Noon - don't seem like eggheads; but there's no doubting the intelligent design of their gloriously adventurous off-kilter pop and the existential underpinnings of their lyrics.

Asked about "Soon We'll Be Living in the Future," the emotionally charged first single off Straylight Run's forthcoming album, The Needles The Space (Universal Republic Records), John confides: "I'm rea...
