t. A. T. u. was a Russian music duo composed of Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova. Formed in May 1999 by Ivan Shapovalov, the group signed a deal with independent label Neoformat, then later signed with Universal Music Russia, and finally with Interscope Records in 2001.

Their debut album, “200 Po Vstrechnoy,” was released in May 2001. The English version of the album was released in 2002 entitled “200 km/h in the Wrong Lane.” The first single from this album was “All The Things She Said” released in October 2002. t. A. T. u. gained mainstream recognition in 2003 with the release of “All The Things She Said,” which topped the charts worldwide including their native Russia, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Switzerland and other European countries. The music video caused controversy worldwide, showing the girls kissing each other in school uniforms behind a fence. The album reached #13 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Albums chart and #12 on the U.K. Albums chart.

t. A. T. u. released their second English album on October 2005 titled “Dangerous and Moving.” Its Russian counterpart was released that same month, titled “Lyudi Invalidy.” “All About Us” was the lead single of the album, released in September 2005. It became a Top 10 hit across Europe and the world. It peaked at #8 on the U.K. Singles chart and #6 on the European Hot 100. Also it reached #13 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.

“Vesyolye Ulybki,” t.A.T.u's third Russian studio album, was released in October 2008. The English counterpart, “Waste Management,” was released in December 2009. In Russia the album debuted and peaked at #3 on the Russian chart.

At the end of March 2011, t. A. T. u. management released a press release on their official website declaring t. A. T. u. over. Due to conflicts between the girls, and both wanting to pursue solo careers, the duo was officially announced as disbanded.
