Aretha Franklin
Move over Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Rihanna. Queen of soul Aretha Franklin's "I Never Loved A Man The Way I Loved You" has topped a new poll to find the greatest albums released by female artists.

Franklin's 1967 breakthrough album beat out challenges from Joni Mitchell's "Blue" and "Dusty in Memphis" by Dusty Springfield to claim the number-one spot in Rolling Stone magazine's new countdown.

Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours," featuring the talents of Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie, also made the top five, as did Patti Smith's "Horses."

It took her closest rival Mariah Carey five years and four months to land the feat; Rihanna did it in four years, 11 months and two weeks.

Only the Beatles and The Supremes have better chart records - the Fab Four landed their first 10 number ones i...

The Afghan Whigs
The Afghan Whigs stood apart from their contemporaries in the grunge-soaked '90s by injecting an element of soulful R&B strut to the band's hard-edged, post-punk aggression. More than 15 years after the acclaimed group's debut, the music's cocksure swagger, dynamic arrangements and polished lyricism still sound fresh. The band recently reconvened for the first time after splitting in 2001 to record a pair of new songs for The Afghan Whigs' first-ever, career-spanning compilation. The album, Unbreakable: A Retrospective 1990-2006 was released from Rhino Records on June 5.
