Taylor Hicks Dropped By Label

Taylor "Soul Patrol" Hicks has become the second former American Idol winner to be dropped by record label J Records in the space of three weeks. Hicks won the 2006 series of the TV talent contest and went on to release his self-titled debut studio album on J Records.

But the company has now decided to let Hicks go - just weeks after American Idol's second season winner Ruben Studdard was also dropped.

A label spokesperson tells Entertainment Weekly, "Taylor is going to record his next album on his own. He is no longer on the J Records roster."

Former American Idol winner Ruben Studdard has been dropped from his record label. Studdard was released from J Records earlier this week after failing to match the success of his debut album, 2003's Soulful, with his latest works, including last year's The Return - which barely sold 235,000 copies.

But Studdard is not letting his label news upset him - he's keeping busy with plans to play jazz great Fats Waller in a theater tour of Ain't Misbehavin'.

Music mogul Simon Cowell will quit TV talent show American Idol after three more seasons. The British pop Svengali has found stars Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, and Jordin Sparks on the first six seasons of the show and is currently in the middle of auditioning wannabe singers in season seven.

American Idol boss Nigel Lythgoe has hit out at Rosie O'Donnell after she accused the show of being "racist and weightist." O'Donnell was angry because previous contestant Frenchie Davis was axed from the talent contest for having appeared in porn pictures - and current contestant Antonella Barba wasn't, despite appearing to have committed the same offense.

A staggering 37.3 million Americans tuned in to watch the sixth season premiere of hit talent show American Idol on Tuesday night. The figures, 2 million more than last year's season debut, gave the show its second highest-rated telecast ever.
