Kirsten Dunst
Kirsten Dunst has been a successful actor for over two decades, and she’s only 29. Now that she is a grown-up living on her own, she finally feels like she’s made it. Not because of he successful movies or her awards, but because of her neighbor.

“There are moments when you know you’ve actually made it,” Dunst said, speaking at a Young Hollywood panel at AFI Fest. “I’m a big R.E.M. fan. When I was younger, I used to jump around to ‘Stand’ in my living room. Now Michael Stipe is my neighbor. That’s when I made it. Michael Stipe is my neighbor.”

Not only does Dunst have a famous neighbor, b...

Kirsten Dunst
R.E.M.'s poignant final video for the group's last single release "We All Go Back To Where We Belong" is a three-and-a-half minute study of actress Kirsten Dunst.

Directed by frontman Michael Stipe and Dominic DeJoseph, the black and white promo doesn't feature any of the band members - just the actress listening to the group's swansong while trying to stifle the giggles.

A second version of the video features poet and filmmaker John Giorno.

R.E.M. shocked the music world last month when the band announced it was splitting after 19 years.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's '50/50' Head Shaving Scene Was Improvised

September 30th, 2011 2:00pm EDT
Movie 50 50
The posters for the new movie 50/50 already give away one of the major scenes. Joseph Gordon-Levitt shaves his head on camera. He plays a man coping with a cancer in which he has a 50 percent chance of surviving. Seth Rogen plays his supportive friend, and as the film’s producer joked about the iconic scene.

“We did it twice, six months apart,” Rogen said while doing press at the Toronto International Film Festival. “Yeah, we only could do that once and we improvised it for the most part, which could’ve been the stupidest thing anyone’s ever done because we really could only do it once.”

May 9th, 2011 11:45pm EDT
Michael Stipe
REM frontman Michael Stipe was once thrown out of a concert at gunpoint after he tried to excrement on stage.

The musician was performing in America in the 1980s when he became offended by the audience, who mistook his band for a ska group.

In protest, Stipe pulled down his trousers and tried to relieve himself in front of the shocked crowd - but the band was thrown out of the venue with guns held to them following the incident.

He tells Interview magazine, "I pulled my pants down (on stage) once and tried to take a s**t on stage as a protest to an audience who thought we were a ska band...

Michael Stipe
REM frontman Michael Stipe became so ill as he battled bulimia, he thought he was suffering from AIDS.

The singer experienced a breakdown after the band shot to fame in the 1980s and spent a year in the grip of the eating disorder. Stipe admits he struggled to deal with the group's success, and ended up "unraveling on the inside."

He tells Interview magazine, "I distinctly remember a conversation with my band in the van where I was having a complete meltdown. It was 1984, I think, and I was huddled in the back corner of our van and saying, 'I can't do this. I can't do this.' I didn't wa...

Music Review: R.E.M. 'Collapse Into Now' (Warner)

March 10th, 2011 4:00pm EST
R.E.M.
Picking up where 2008’s Accelerate left off, R.E.M.’s latest studio offering Collapse Into Now finds the long tenured act looking to the past in order to rediscover their classic pop imbued swagger, though that experiment doesn’t always work this time around. The band succeeds in the simple fact that Collapse sounds very similar to Accelerate, though it doesn’t do anything in the way of breaking new ground for the pop pioneers.

In keeping with the pattern R.E.M. set forth with Accelerate, most of Collapse is comprised of middling up-tempo rockers ("All the Best," "Mine Smells Like Honey") ...

April 10th, 2008 4:01pm EDT
R.E.M.
Legend has it that guitarist Peter Buck was working at Wuxtry Records in Athens, Georgia when Michael Stipe strolled in. They talked about music and bands. The rest is history. Twenty-eight years and fourteen albums later R.E.M. has become the little band that could. With the 1982 EP "Chronic Town" and 1983's "Murmur," the college radio indie sound was all but invented by Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, and Michael Stipe. Back then, supporters could join the R.E.M. Fan Club for $10. Always the band to put its fans first, membership is still $10.

After a hugely successful deca...
