Stephen Michael Reich was born on October 3, 1936 in New York City, and is a music composer, whose work has led the way for other minimal music composers, such as La Monte Young, Terry Riley, and Philip Glass. Reich rose to notoriety with his compositions: “It's Gonna Rain” and “Come Out.” During the 1980s, Reich's work took on a darker feel with historical themes from his Jewish heritage; his piece “Different Trains” garnered him a Grammy Award. In 2007, Reich won the Polar Music Prize, and two years later in 2009 he won the Pulitzer Prize for Music for his “Double Sextet.” Reich grew up between New York and California, taking in the musical culture of both cities.
