India.Arie Slams Zoe Saldana's Nina Simone Role

November 8th, 2012 8:51am EST
India Arie
R&B star India Arie has slammed Zoe Saldana's casting as jazz legend Nina Simone, branding the move "ridiculous".

Cynthia Mort, director of upcoming biopic Nina, has been forced to defend her choice of Saldana for the title role following a wave of criticism, including from the late singer's daughter Simone Kelly.

Now, Arie has waded into the controversy after seeing photographs of the Avatar actress wearing prosthetics while filming the movie, insisting Saldana looks "weird".

In a message posted on NinaSimone.com, she writes, "I saw the images of Zoe Saldana as Nina Simone... and I t...

Zoe Saldana To Replace Mary J. Blige In Nina Simone Biopic

August 16th, 2012 3:26pm EDT
Zoe Saldana
Zoe Saldana has replaced R&B superstar Mary J. Blige in a forthcoming biopic about jazz great Nina Simone.

Blige was cast in the movie adaptation of Cynthia Mort's Nina in 2010 and was due to begin filming last year.

However, the project suffered a funding setback which delayed the start of the shoot indefinitely, and the problems prompted Blige to step down from the role.

Producers have since resolved the investment issue and Saldana has signed up in the singer's place, days after news of the Avatar beauty's involvement in a new Simone biopic surfaced earlier this week.

She will le...

July 12th, 2011 12:20am EDT
Mary J. Blige
Mary J. Blige is spending the summer researching the life of jazz and blues legend Nina Simone ready for an upcoming biopic.

The schedule of Blige's current film Rock of Ages has forced film bosses to delay the start of the Simone story until October - and that gives the R&B star plenty of time to study up on one of her heroines - and get her sound just right for the project.

The "I'm Going Down" singer says, "I have a lot of YouTube (footage) of her to study her and I read about her and talked to different people about her. I need to become whoever she was and dig in.

"I got to get a pi...
