McMainstream: The Evolving Independence Of The Music Scene

As I perused the soundtracks section of a local music store last week, I stumbled upon the Grey's Anatomy Soundtrack, Volume 3. Having apparently missed Volumes 1 and 2, and, admittedly, having only caught the actual show on one or two occasions, I had little notion of Grey's musical backdrop.

But I went in with my assumptions. After all, this is the show that brought "McDreamy" to our national lexicon. Wouldn’t it follow that its music would be lighthearted, upbeat, and, well... McDreamy?

Domestic Abuse Charges Against Shins' Marty Crandall Dropped

The Shins rocker Marty Crandall has had the domestic abuse case against him dropped due to lack of evidence. The New Slang star was arrested along with his ex-girlfriend, former America's Next Top Model contestant Elyse Sewell, last weekend after an altercation at a Sacramento, California, hotel.

Sewell was released on Saturday but Crandall was held on $25,000 bail until he was eventually freed on Monday.

However, it has now emerged that neither of them will face prosecution over the alleged fight.

Stars Design T-Shirts For Charity

Iggy Pop, Duran Duran and Daft Punk are among the musicians who have designed T-shirts to raise money for political charity Rock The Vote. The stars have all come up with their own take on the world-famous Playboy magazine 'bunny' logo for the 2008 Playboy Rock The Rabbit T-shirt series.

The shirts will be sold at Bloomingdales stores in the U.S. and online at

The bands' original designs will be sold at auction with proceeds going to Rock The Vote, an organization which encourages young Americans to get involved in the political process.

Shins Star Marty Crandall Charged With Domestic Assault

The Shins rocker Marty Crandall has been charged with domestic assault following an alleged physical altercation with his model girlfriend on Friday. The star is currently being held on $25,000 bail by Sacramento County, California police.

Crandall and Elyse Sewell, who has previously appeared on reality TV show America's Next Top Model, were both arrested following an incident at a Sacramento hotel. Sewell was released on Saturday. The pair are due in court in the next week.

Natalie Portman Compiles Album For Charity

Natalie Portman has compiled an album of 16 of her favorite songs to raise money for charity. The star has selected tracks by artists including Norah Jones, Devendra Banhart and The Shins for the disc, the proceeds from which will go to FINCA International, an organization that provides financial services to low-income entrepreneurs.

The album, Big Change: Songs For FINCA, will be available to buy on website iTunes from October 30.

Hip-hop boy band Pretty Ricky has ended the Dreamgirls soundtrack's reign at the top of the US album charts after debuting Late Night Special at number one.

The group's new album beat Wincing The Night Away by cult indie act The Shins to the top spot with first-week sales of 132,000. The Shins came in second with 118,000 copies sold.

While Pretty Ricky hit the top 20 in 2005 with their last album Bluestars, The Shins have never been higher than number 86 on The Billboard 200 chart before today.
