Samael are a industrial black metal band that formed in 1987 in Sion, Switzerland. During the 1990s the band incorporated more of an electronic sound ino their music and became innovators for post-black metal styles. Samael released several demos during their formative years, including an extremely rare demo titled “Medieval Prophecy.” Their first demos showcased a slow, doomy style of thrash metal with raw vocals. The band were signed early on and put out their debut, “Worship Him” in 1991, quickly followed up by “Blood Ritual” in 1992. Their third album, “Ceremony of Opposites” came in 1994 and marked a musical change with the implementation of industrial-styled song techniques, employed by the use of keyboards and (minimalist) acoustic percussion. Around this time the band switched labels and left the French record label Osmose Productions and signed with Century Media Records. Their album “Passage” (1996) saw the band attract larger audiences, in addition to the music video for the song "Jupiterian Vibe" getting airplay on MTV's Headbanger's Ball.

After the band's fifth offering “Eternal” in 1999, Samael would not renew their contract with Century Media. In 2004, “Reign of Light” was released through the independent label Galactical Records. The band's 2006 electronica project, “Era One,” featuring Vorph and Xy marked a return to Century Media Records. Samael went on to release four more albums over the next four years, with their most current “Lux Mundi” released in 2011.
