Why Are The Roots Watching The 'Fifty Shades Of Grey' Trailer?

July 31st, 2014 11:32am EDT
Questlove watching Fifty Shades Of Grey Trailer
Everyone's been talking about the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer since its release a week ago, and Jimmy Fallon thought he'd have a little fun with it during Tuesday night's episode of The Tonight Show.

The host pranked house band The Roots by sitting them all down individually and filming their reactions.

Unbeknownst to the band, a very frightening image was inserted at a random spot in the trailer, causing drummer Questlove & co. to nearly jump out of their skin.

Best thing is, it was all captured on tape. Check it out below...

July 8th, 2014 8:00pm EDT
30 Best Songs Of 2014 (So Far)
2014 has delivered a wealth of exceptional new songs. Some songs truly captivate with their songwriting, while others are ‘records’ which standout because of their sound. Choosing only 30 songs out of a sea filed with truly terrific songs is difficult; this list provides 30 of the best songs from January through June 2014.

1) Sam Smith, "Stay With Me"

from In the Lonely Hour

Maybe he’s ‘too emotional’ and 'sucks at one-night stands' as he sings, but Sam Smith can definitely sing – that’s the understatement of the year. The soaring, highly relatable “Stay With Me” exemplifies Smith’...

Review: The Roots Continue To Transcend The Confines Of Hip-Hop On '…And Then You Shoot Your Cousin'

May 21st, 2014 11:34am EDT
The Roots - And then you shoot your Cousin
The notion that “hip-hop don’t stop” is certainly a true statement as the genre hasn’t really ended, but for a while, the trendy thing from more intellectual MCs – notably Nas – was asserting that “Hip Hop is Dead”. Perhaps it was an exaggeration, but Nas definitely had a valid point back in 2006, just as The Roots seem to have a valid claim not completely dissimilar on latest LP, …And Then You Shoot Your Cousin. Cousin definitely finds The Roots in conceptual form, waving the finger at the superficiality and shallowness of the rap industry these days, both musically speaking and as far as ...

Barack Obama Slow Jams The News On 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon'

April 25th, 2012 4:07pm EDT
Barack Obama
President Barack Obama was on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night (well, this morning) at the University of North Carolina. Part of his appearance was a "Slow Jam" of the news, where he sold his idea of halting an increase in interest rates on college students' Stafford loans.

Slow Jam is a recurring bit where Jimmy and a guest talk about a serious issue to smooth music by his house band, The Roots. This time, the bit was strictly partisan in nature. "Their position is that students just have to make this rate increase work. Frankly, I'm not buying it," said Obama, the straight man in...

11 Essential Albums of 2011
It’s never been a hard and fast rule that the essential albums list that I comprise at the end of every year for Starpulse must contain an even 10 or 15 or 20 albums. As I covered in the introduction of last year’s installment, there are a few basic questions I’ll ask myself when I get started, stuff like: will this album be remembered in few years?

This question is most easily answered when an album contributes in a relevant way to the social culture of that given year (I’m looking at you, Britney 2000 Edition Spears). But sometimes, funny things happen and one finds that cultural relevan...
