| The Rolling Stones It's Only Rock 'N Roll [Bootleg] Release Date: z Rating: ![]() |
It's Only Rock 'n Roll (not to be confused with the band's 1974 album of the same name, released on Virgin Records) is the sixth of an eight-CD bootleg series charting the bands unreleased studio outtakes. This collection of unreleased material had mostly been recorded throughout what is commonly regarded as the Rolling Stones' golden years, 1970-1975. That the band is at its peak creatively and musically is easily noticeable on such tracks as "Tumbling Dice" (a rather more laid-back version of the Exile on Main St. classic), "Travelling Man" (an unreleased track from the Exile on Main St. sessions), and, indeed, throughout most of the release. Besides compiling some of the finest Rolling Stones hidden gems, It's Only Rock 'n Roll features early, and hugely different, versions of "Silver Train," "Leather Jacket," "Tumbling Dice," and more. The rather poor sound quality and inconsistency of this release will, unfortunately, deter many. The Rolling Stones purist, however, will find It's Only Rock 'n Roll highly agreeable for its many fine songs. Ben Davies, All Music Guide
