Max RoachTo the Max! Release Date: 1990 09 15-1991 06 25 Running Time: 95:56 Label: Blue Moon Rating: ![]() |
Max Roach is heard in a variety of settings on this colorful and varied double CD. The three-part "Ghost Dance" features the innovative drummer with a vocal choir and his percussion group, M'Boom. M'Boom also pops up on two other selections, the Max Roach Quartet (with trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, Odean Pope on tenor and electric bassist Tyrone Brown) has four features, Roach takes two unaccompanied drum solos and the Quartet joins up with The Uptown String Quartet to form Roach's Double Quartet on a 21-minute version of "A Little Booker." The music, which crosses quite a few boundaries, is consistently fascinating and forms a definitive portrait of the ageless drummer's wide musical interests in the early '90s.
