Clarence LaVaughn Franklin, also known as Bishop or Rev. C. L. Franklin, was born on January 22, 1915 and was an American Baptist minister, a civil rights activist, and father of the legendary soul and gospel singer Aretha Franklin. He was born Clarence LaVaughn Walker in Sunflower County, Mississippi, to sharecroppers Willie Walker and Rachel Walker née Pittman. Franklin's father walked out on his mother when he was just four yars old and when his mother later re-married he took the surname of his step-father.
