'The X Factor' Recap: Melanie Wins + The Year-End Awards

December 23rd, 2011 9:28am EST
Melanie Amaro is announed winner of THE X FACTOR
Ordinarily I give shows like this the full mega-diary treatment, but ‘X Factor’ doesn’t seem worthy.

This show is a disappointment by most measures. To wit, last night’s show did about a third of the demo rating of ‘Idol’s’ finale last may. So, I can’t quite give this the full mega-diary. So instead, I’m going to whip out the first annual X-Factor Awards.

First, congratulations to this year’s winner Melanie Amaro. I look forward to seeing your Pepsi commercial and then never hearing from you again until you’re brought back as a musical guest for one of next year’s results show. Enjoy your...

Accident During 'The X Factor' Finale Injures Three

December 23rd, 2011 8:53am EST
The X Factor
The finale of The X Factor on Thursday was marred by backstage drama after three crew workers were injured in a freak accident.

The Simon Cowell reality TV show wrapped up its first U.S. series with a live final featuring performances from star names including 50 Cent, Justin Bieber and Leona Lewis.

However, just before the In Da Club hit-maker took to the stage, a stair riser came unhinged and two workers were hit in the head, with a third taking a knock to the elbow, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Paramedics were called to the Los Angeles studio and the three stagehands were t...

The X Factor Recap: Stars Join The Contestants In A Ludicrous Finale

December 22nd, 2011 9:36am EST
X-Factor Finale
There have been a lot of stupid ideas on TV: AfterMASH, giving Christopher Moynihan a second series, that dancing show where Paula Abdul stood on a huge globe, but last night may have been the biggest brainfart in the history of television – having the contestants stop their performances to introduce a duet with an established star.

Not only was this move distracting and off-putting, but it totally undermined the point of the competition. These are supposed to be discovered talents, not established stars doing duet performances, and that’s exactly what this move made them seem like.

Addit...

Nicole Scherzinger Is Eye Popping In A Cleavage-Baring Dress At 'X Factor' Press Conference

December 20th, 2011 10:00am EST
Nicole Scherzinger
Nicole Scherzinger stood out at "The X Factor" Press Conference in Los Angeles yesterday in a tight dress that showed off her ample curves. Fellow judge Paula Abdul went a more conservative route in a pinstriped pant suit (see photos on the following pages).

There are currently three contestants left in the competition: Melanie Amaro, Chris Rene and Josh Krajcik (with whom Nicole posed for photos at the press conference).

Part one of the season finale airs on Wednesday. A winner will be crowned in a two-hour live show on Thursday.

'The X Factor' Recap: Breaking Down The Final Three

December 16th, 2011 9:19am EST
X-Factor: Breaking Down the Final Three
There are so many things I could write about last night’s results show. I could write about the super-awkward group number. I could write about the Youtube clips of the contestants’ families (seriously, they couldn’t send out a real camera?). I could write about Florence & the Machine destroying the world and making Nicole Scherzinger look like an early-round cast-off by comparison. I could write about how I watched the entire show in about 17 minutes thanks to the power of DVR.

I could write about all that, but it doesn’t matter because we have a final three! Let’s break down their chance...

'The X Factor' Recap: The Final Three Looks Pretty Clear

December 15th, 2011 9:48am EST
Top 4 Performance: Marcus Canty performs
In honor of last night’s Pepsi Challenge audience song selection, I’m letting my readers write the opening to this week’s column.

It’s easy, just write something snarky about the show in the comments section, and the best one wins $5 Million! Or a Pepsi. Or nothing. Yes. Let’s go with nothing. The winner wins nothing.

Ready? Comment!

Now I’ll get on with the recap…

Marcus Canty's First Performance: “I’ll Make Love To You” by Boyz II Men

LA Reid Said: I could not be more proud of you.

Nicole Said: You are bringing sexy back.

Paula Said: You are the entertainer of this group and you di...

'The X Factor' Recap: Rachel Goes Home In A Devastating Results Show

December 9th, 2011 9:25am EST
The X Factor - Rachel Goes Home
During my typical fast-forwarding through of the recaps of the previous week’s show and whatever pre-packaged piece of nonsense they force us to watch to get to “know” the contestants better, I began to wonder why I even bother to watch the results show. I could just as easily find out who got voted off, write a little tribute to them, put together the power rankings, and move on to tonight’s episode of ‘Beavis and Butt-head”.

As I fast-forwarded through my existential crisis, I quickly arrived at the real reason for watching this show: The save-me song.

This wrinkle is definitely the bes...

'The X Factor' Final Five Recap: It's Melanie And Everybody Else

December 8th, 2011 9:36am EST
Melanie Amaro performs in front of the judges on THE X FACTOR
In honor of ‘The X Factor’ truncating all the contestants’ performance in order to cram all ten of them into 90 minutes so there’s enough time for ‘I Hate My Teenage Daughter’, I’m going to truncate this recap’s intro.

See? It’s already over! Let’s get on with it.

Melanie Amaro's First Performance: “Someone Like You” by Adele

LA Reid Said: It was really good.

Nicole Said: You looked and sounded like the rock star diva you are.

Paula Said: It was too short. That’s my only complaint.

Simon Said: It wasn’t karaoke, it was doing something different with a track.

The Verdict:

I guess thi...

'The X Factor' Recap: Drew Ryniewicz Goes Home In A Shocker

December 2nd, 2011 10:01am EST
Drew Ryniewicz Goes Home In A Shocker
It’s been a bad couple of weeks for the Molly Dewolf Swenson Scale.

One week after my favorite performer, Leroy Bell, bit the dust, my second favorite, Drew, left last night in a shocking result that didn’t even seem possible after it happened.

Why? Because Drew seemed like the clear favorite and every single step of her elimination – being in the bottom three, having to sing, having three different judges send her home – were almost dreamlike. It was like watching a heavily favored NFL team get upset. You see the touchdowns, but they don’t seem real as they’re happening. That’s what watc...

'The X Factor' Recap: Not Many Kings On Michael Jackson Night

December 1st, 2011 9:46am EST
Melanie Amaro performs in front of the judges on THE X FACTOR
I’m back again after a week off for Thanksgiving this time. Curse you, Turkey and your insufferable way of making me miss ‘The X Factor’.

Not to worry though. I will be here for the duration of this season. First, let’s get to my quick recap of last week.

I thought it was LeRoy’s best performance and I’m a bit dismayed to see him go. After all, he was this year’s winner of the Molly DeWolf Swenson Scale and I was rooting for him. I also think he greatly outperformed Marcus in the sing-off. Simon should have had the stones to keep him in there. Maybe it’s because he just hates Nicole enoug...

'The X-Factor' Recap: Stacy Leaves, Astro Throws A Tantrum, + Power Rankings

November 18th, 2011 9:32am EST
Astro Throws Hissy Fit on the X Factor
Sometimes I wonder how I’m going to fill even more than a few sentences about the hour-long list reading that is The ‘X Factor’ results show. Am I going to insult the performer? Am I going to remark for the 47,000th time how inane the group number is? Will I think of new ways to mock overgrown chin Steve Jones? It’s a constant struggle. But this week, I didn’t even have to think twice. All thanks to that pint-sized pile of poison that is Astro.

The sad thing is that I’d actually started to like Astro. His punkish audition was growing so distant a memory, washed away by his excellent perfor...

'The X Factor' Recap: Only A Few Really Bring It On Rock Night

November 17th, 2011 9:25am EST
THE X FACTOR: LeRoy Bell performs
I’m back after a week off for my sister’s wedding, and before we get started I should fill you in on what I thought of last week.

The three performances I really liked were LeRoy Bell, Melanie Amaro and (surprisingly) Rachel Crow who I thought flashed a voice I hadn’t heard from her yet in the competition.

The three performances I thought deserved to be voted off were Stacy Francis, Chris Rene, and The Stereo Hogzz. Stacy just picked a terrible song, Chris is still struggling with pitch and The Stereo Hogzz were just a mess. Not surprisingly, they got voted off.

And now that we’re caught...
