William "Red" Garland was born on May 13, 1923 in Dallas, Texas, and was a hard bop jazz pianist whose block chord style, in part originated by Milt Buckner, influenced many forthcoming pianists in the jazz idiom. Garland did not come from a musical family, but showed great interest in music at an early age. He first studied the clarinet and alto saxophone and then switched in 1940 to the piano, where he fell in love. Garland spent copious amounts of time practicing the piano and rapidly developed into a proficient player.
