Once upon a time, someone in the hip-hop community decreed that Bill Clinton had earned the “Black People Card”. I’m not certain, but it sounds like something Chris Rock would’ve said, so for now I’ll credit him with this. The argument was that Clinton was so cool, so down with black people, that had it not been for the colour of his skin, he’d be considered black on street cred alone. Think of the Black People Card as the Black Amex of the hip-hop community: you can’t apply for the card. If you ask, chances are you can’t afford it. No, you have to be sent an invitation. The hip-hop communi...

Q-Tip Doesn't Support Michael Rapaport's Documentary

December 3rd, 2010 5:09pm EST
Q-Tip
A Tribe Called Quest co-founder Q-Tip has hit out at actor-turned-filmmaker Michael Rapaport's documentary about the legendary hip-hop group, insisting he is "not in support" of the project.

The My Name Is Earl star started work on the film in 2008 to tell the story of A Tribe Called Quest's rise to fame, their 2008 reunion and their subsequent fall out, which led to another break-up.

The independent documentary, Beats Rhymes and Life, was unveiled as one of the official pictures for the 2011 Sundance Film Festival - but Q-Tip has moved to distance himself from the film, insisting the p...

A lot of other critics have blasted Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood,” but honestly I found it to be pretty interesting. It is slightly long winded and its action scenes are a bit frenetic, however it dares to be different in how it approaches the Robin Hood tale which I appreciate.

As a narrative "Robin Hood" operates like a prequel, covering the events leading to Robin’s branding as an outlaw. This Robin is serious, more like a solider commanding his friends in battle, than the lighthearted rogue whose archery and skills with a sword are so well known in the legend. While he believes in eq...

Consequence's Debut Album, "Don't Quit Your Day Job," Out March 6; Check Out The First Single

February 14th, 2007 3:08pm EST
Consequence
Consequence was born in Queens at the dawn of the hip-hop era, when all rap was East Coast rap and all of rap's influential early artists were based in the New York City area. Throughout his career, Consequence gained credibility not only on the streets with his peers but with the critics as well. A gifted storyteller, he has a keen and unwavering sense of what he is all about. His objective realizm provides a clear alternative not only to gangsta rap but also to the watered-down and overly calculated pop-rap. "What I rhyme about is what I see around me, I'm a result of the hood, my rhymes ...

Hip-Hop always had an underground, a minor league, if you will. It was a place that artists kicked around, cutting their teeth, sharpening their lyrical swords while they awaited their chance to shine. But in the mid-'90s, as mainstream Hip-Hop embraced its pop potential, the nature of the underground changed. Rather than serve as a batters box, it became a movement unto itself. Subterranean rappers no longer pleaded for love from the majors, instead, stridently moving against the grain in a form of non-violent protest to what they saw as the exploitation of their art. As a result, mai...
