Latin Jazz King Poncho Sanchez Pays Homage To Soul Legends On 'Raise Your Hand'

(Los Angeles, CA) - GRAMMY® Award winner Poncho Sanchez released his first record in two years, Raise Your Hand (Concord Picante) on May 22. Sanchez has called on an array of guest artists to create a record that combines his bedrock Latin jazz style inherited from Cal Tjader, Tito Puente, and Mongo Santamaria with the funky brand of R&B and soul music that inspired him as a teenager in the 1960s.

Latin Jazz Drummer Ray Barretto Dies

Jazz percussionist Ray Barretto died today after suffering from pneumonia. He was 76. Barretto had also undergone heart bypass surgery last month. He died at Hackensack University Medical Center with his wife and two sons by his side.

Credited for introducing the conga drum into popular use, Barretto was awarded a Grammy for best Tropical Latin performance in 1989 for the hit "Ritmo En El Corazon" with Celia Cruz. The gifted New Yorker was inducted into the International Latin Music Hall of Fame in 1990, and last month he was honored by the National Endowment for the Arts' Jazz Master...
