Prince Buster
Rock A Shacka, Vol. 5: Dance Cleopatra
Release Date: 2003 06 21
Label: Island
Rating:

A much-needed reissue for one of Prince Buster's most popular albums. Rock A Shacka, Vol. 5: Dance Cleopatra was originally released in the early '70s, a collection of numbers either recorded or re-recorded around 1967-1968. Old favorites "Madness" and "Al Capone" are both present in new takes and come close to eclipsing their prototypes -- who, after all, could argue with five minutes of the latter, with sharp guitars chasing the horns out of town? Equally successful is Buster's take on Desmond Dekker's "007," and while versions of Hopeton Lewis' "Take It Easy" and the Paragons' "On the Beach" fare a little less successfully, "Oh My Love" is such a delight that you can even forgive the clumsy girlie backups that accompany the Prince through the chorus. Elsewhere, Lee Dorsey's "Ya Ya" is brilliantly recast as "Waiting for My Rude Girl," the Western-flavored "Cincinnati Kid" soundtracks the best cowboy film you've never seen, and "Sounds and Pressure" and "Move Over" see the Prince hurtle into thumping R&B territory without ever losing an iota of his natural savage delight. And then there's the scintillating title track, an ancient Egyptian themed romp that brings out some of Buster's most passionate vocal exhortations. It's a turbulent collection, then, but an essential addition to any self-respecting Buster collection. Dave Thompson, All Music Guide
