| Elvis Presley Nashville Outtakes & Early Interviews Release Date: 2000 Label: Wizardo Rating: ![]() |
Most of the Elvis Presley bootlegs that surfaced in the 1970s contained live recordings; however, some of them focused on studio rarities. The Nashville Outtakes & Early Interviews, for example, is a 1970s bootleg that provides studio outtakes from 1955 as well as interviews from the late '50s and early '60s. Side one of this vinyl LP is devoted entirely to the 1955 outtakes, which range from "Good Rocking Tonight" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky" to "Mystery Train," "I Don't Care If the Sun Don't Shine," and "My Baby Is Gone." These outtakes offer decent sound quality (by 1950s standards), and the material is historically important and cutting-edge in 1955; rock & roll was where hip-hop was in the early 1980s. Side two, meanwhile, contains mostly interviews with Presley, some of which were recorded just before he entered the U.S. Army in 1958 and some of which were recorded after he returned to civilian life in 1960. During one of the late '50s interviews, Presley is asked whether or not he thinks rock & roll will still be popular when he gets out of the Army, and he predicts that it will be around for a very long time. (By the year 2000, rock had been going strong for 45 years, so Presley was absolutely right). After the interviews, side two shifts its focus to some 1950s studio rarities by Jerry Lee Lewis, including an outtake of "Great Balls of Fire." One of the most interesting Presley bootlegs of the 1970s, The Nashville Outtakes & Early Interviews went out of print when the illicit Wizardo Records was shut down by the FBI in 1977.
