Bud Powell
Ups and Downs
Release Date: 1965
Running Time: 36:52
Label: Mainstream
Rating:

This CD reissue of the Mainstream LP states in Nat Hentoff's liner notes that the performances are from the mid-'50s and that pianist Bud Powell is heard at the peak of his powers. Wrong on both counts. Actually this set is comprised of Powell's final recordings, dating from late 1964 to early 1965, shortly following his return to New York after several years of relative security in Paris. The great bop innovator had declined greatly since his prime days but actually plays better than one might expect. The bassist and drummer have never been identified. This set is important historically but obviously there are many more rewarding Bud Powell recordings to acquire first. Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
