Though she's her own woman, Portuondo is in the general vein of Caridad Cuervo. She does ballads nicely, but she's at her best at sones, which she swings just as well as Celia -- much aided by the leader of her band, one Adalberto, who sings a second voice with the true chest-richness of the classic sonero, besides running a demon band, solo trumpet, tres and all.
