Do You Remember These 'Idol' Hit Songs?

5/13/2015 5:03pm EDT
10 Of The Biggest Hits From 'American Idol' Contestants
Say it ain’t so! The popular singing competition, ‘American Idol,’ will be ending after its 15th season in 2016, and honestly, it’s a little hard to believe. Since its inception in 2002, American Idol has been a staple in not only reality shows, but pop music as a whole, and it’s just not going to be the same once it’s gone.

This is no time for sadness, though -- it isn’t gone just yet. So, in the meantime, we should celebrate some of the biggest hits that have spawned from the show’s contestants. There’s been a lot of them, and they’re all fantastic for a ton of different reasons.

'American Idol' Winner Phillip Phillips Wants Out Of His Contract

1/27/2015 6:57pm EST
Phillip Phillips
Phillip Phillips is trying hard to get out of the contract he signed as part of a deal when he won the 11th season of "American Idol" in 2012.

The singer is demanding release from his recording, merchandising and management deals with 19 Entertainment because he wants more artistic freedom, and he claims that he's being "manipulated" by 19 Entertainment and wishes to void his contracts, which his lawyer called "oppressive" and "fatally conflicted" in the lawsuit he filed against the company.

"I am very grateful for the opportunities provided to me through appearing on ‘American Idol,'" Ph...

'American Idol' Winner Phillip Phillips Engaged To Longtime Girl
Singer Phillip Phillips popped the question to longtime girlfriend Hannah Blackwell.

Phillips posted the happy news on Instagram and Facebook, sharing a photo of himself with Blackwell, who was wearing an engagement ring.

The "American Idol Season 11" winner captioned the pic “My best Christmas surprise is happening. We’re engaged yall!”

Blackwell wrote on Instagram, "I've been dreaming of this for over 20 years. I've been dreaming of this guy for just that long. Overwhelmed with happiness. @phillphill."

The singer proposed in their home state of Georgia.

Phillips told Blackwell to m...

Review: Phillip Phillips, ‘Behind the Light’

5/22/2014 8:15pm EDT
Phillip Phillips, ‘Behind the Light’
Phillips takes a step forward on his sophomore LP, though nothing supplants “Home”

“Searchlight” opens Behind the Light abruptly and somewhat indistinctly. The folk rumination kicks off the track, instantly channeling Phillips’ “Home”and of course one ubiquitous Mumford & Sons. Not long after the layers of acoustic guitar and banjos, Phillips begins singing. The thinking isn’t bad given the scope of the said hit, but also, the likelihood of replicating “Home” is a steep one. “Searchlight” doesn’t end up being a bad joint once it settles in, but I’m not sure that it’s more effective than...

Once known as the show that could instantly make you a star, "American Idol" has suffered lackluster ratings and has had as many "Idols" fail as succeed. Still, the winners that America voted for have not always stayed within the realm of music, some have spread their wings to the acting world as well. Some of the more popular winners are still in the spotlight, some have faded into obscurity, Here is the latest on what many of your favorite "American Idol" winners have been up to since winning.

Phillip Phillips Surpasses Kelly Clarkson With Best Selling Single By 'Idol' Alum

3/28/2013 2:36pm EDT
Phillip Phillips
Phillip Phillips' hit Home has surpassed Kelly Clarkson's Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) as the bestselling single by an American Idol star.

Just two weeks ago, the 22 year old returned to the Idol stage to sing his new single, Gone, Gone, Gone, and after his performance, judge Randy Jackson presented Phillips with a four-time platinum plaque for his hit coronation song, Home.

And now the tune has become the bestselling single ever released by a former contestant of the singing competition. Selling 4,262,000 digital copies, Home surpasses the reigning bestseller, Stronger (What Doesn'...

6/13/2012 9:05am EDT
Phillip Phillips
Police in Georgia have launched an investigation after a pawn shop owned by American Idol winner Phillip Phillips' family was robbed.

The 21-year-old singer, who won the talent contest last month, has been dealt some bad news after $4,000 worth of merchandise, including guns, flat screen TVs, jewelry and antique coins, was stolen from Albany Sporting Goods and Pawn.

The cash register, which contained $110 at the time, was also taken in the heist, which occurred sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning.

No arrests have been made as yet, reports

'Idol' Star Phillip Phillips Out Of Hospital, Ready For Tour

6/12/2012 11:28am EDT
Phillip Phillips
Following kidney stone surgery last week, "American Idol" season 11 winner Phillip Phillips is out of the hospital and resting at home.

Last Wednesday the singer endured a six-and-a-half hour operation to remove several large stones. Ouch!

The 21-year-old, who won the FOX singing competition last month, left the hospital on Sunday and is preparing for the 45-date "American Idol" summer tour. The first tour, which will feature the top 10 contestants from the latest season of "Idol," kicks off on July 6 in Detroit, Michigan.

He told E! News, "I'm out of the hospital and back to work! Looki...

Phillip Phillips Recovering From Kidney Surgery

6/7/2012 4:19pm EDT
Phillip Phillips
American Idol winner Phillip Phillips is recovering after undergoing hours of surgery to remove a number of large kidney stones.

The singer, who claimed victory on the 11th season of the reality show last month, had been struggling with the pain and discomfort of a congenital kidney condition throughout the competition, and was hospitalized shortly after making it to the finals.

He was scheduled to go under the knife last week, but doctors had to postpone the surgery after he was diagnosed with a sinus infection.

Phillips finally headed into a Los Angeles operating room on Wednesday and ...

Phillip Phillips' Debut Rocks Download Charts

5/31/2012 11:03am EDT
Phillip Phillips
American Idol Phillip Phillips' debut Home sold 278,000 digital copies, despite the finale of the competition being the least-viewed in the show's history. It's the best debut for an American Idol winner since Ruben Studdard 286,000 copies of Flying Without Wings in 2002.

Phillips first week outsold last year's winner Scotty McReery and his song I Love You This Big's first week by 100,000 copies.

Clay Aiken still holds the top spot for an American idol contender, as he sold 393,000 copies of This Is the Night despite coming in second to Studdard.

Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe sold 301...

Phillip Phillips Continues Worrying Trend Of 'White Guy With Guitar' Winners For 'American Idol'

5/24/2012 4:07pm EDT
Phillip Phillips
Nothing against Phillip Phillips, who surely has some talent, but his win is the latest in a line of what fans have coined "White Guys with Guitars," or "WGWG." With ratings and record sales getting lower, can American Idol do anything to curb the trend?

Since the music competition allowed contestants to play instruments while singing, the show has seen David Cook, Kris Allen, Lee DeWyze, Scotty McCreery, and Phillip Phillips take the prize over a more varied and (arguably) talented field. McCreery is a bit different, slanting towards crooning country instead of the light pop the rest of t...

'American Idol' Finale Mega-Diary: A Note-by-Note Account of Phillip Phillps' Big Win

5/24/2012 11:07am EDT
Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez
Welcome to the American Idol finale Mega-Diary! Our annual blow-by-blow recap of what used to be the third-biggest night in television and is now somewhere between the 14th Monday Night Football game and the 15th Monday Night Football game.

But no bother! We’ll press on. And here’s a prediction before the show even starts: The contestants will start singing a song and mid-way through they’ll introduce the original artist to join them onstage. Sorry if I just ruined the show for you.

8:03 – What more could I want to start off the finale than my favorite contestant from this year, Heejun Ha...

Phillip Phillips Crowned 'American Idol' Winner

5/24/2012 9:06am EDT
Phillip Phillips
Phillip Phillips was crowned American Idol winner on Wednesday after seeing off competition from rival singer Jessica Sanchez.

The 21-year-old guitar player triumphed in the glitzy two-hour finale of the TV talent contest and he fought back tears when his name was announced by the show's host Ryan Seacrest.

Phillips is the youngest winner of the competition so far, and he will be hoping to follow in the successful footsteps of other American Idol champions - Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks and Carrie Underwood.

The show was a star-studded affair with Reba McEntire, John Fogerty, Neil Di...

'American Idol' Recap: It's Phillip In A Landslide On Final Performance Night

5/23/2012 7:07am EDT
Phillip Phillips performs on AMERICAN IDOL
The joke ever since Simon left is, “What do the judges even do anymore?” Well, tonight that concern was apt. Very apt. Because the judges never spoke. They didn’t break down individual performances. Instead, they simply offered a few half-finished thoughts at the end of the first two performances before finally swooping in at the end.

I’m not sure why we even needed them until the last minute. They should have been trotted out like wrestlers interrupting a match. That’s how useless they were for the first 45 minutes. It’s like they weren’t there.

So without them, it looks like it’s up to ...

'American Idol' Recap: Joshua Ledet Is Out As The Best Contestant Loses Again

5/18/2012 9:12am EDT
Joshua Ledet is eliminated on AMERICAN IDOL
If there’s one thing we’ve learned about ‘Idol’ it’s that the best doesn’t usually win. Last night, the clear standout of this year’s season, Joshua Ledet, was unceremoniously shown the door while waiting on the doorstep of the finale. This after delivering a stellar rendition of ‘No More Drama’ and winning the night last night by leaps and bounds.

Blame going first. Blame the voters’ apparent detest for soul music. Blame Joshua’s being too old school for the show’s demographic. Whatever the reason, Joshua won’t compete in the finale and join the long line of ‘Idol’ losers who were actuall...

'American Idol': Phillip And Joshua Are The Standouts Of The Final Three

5/17/2012 10:15am EDT
The Final 3: L-R: Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez and Josh Led
Finally, the producers find a way to fill time that’s actually worth mentioning. Traditionally, we’ve saved the big homecoming clip packages for the final three results show, but with two hours to fill (instead of the typical 90 minutes) the producers shrewdly moved those fun packages to the performance show.

I think this worked a lot better because there’s always some sadness, some trepidation, some fear on the results show since somebody is about to get voted off. It’s hard to get in the full celebratory mode of these packages. They just work better on the fun performance show where ever...

'American Idol' Recap: Hollie Cavanagh Goes Home + Final Three Power Rankings

5/11/2012 10:03am EDT
Hollie Cavanagh is eliminated on AMERICAN IDOL
Every year there’s a lurker. That one contestant that you think is going home each week but somehow, improbably, outlasts several other potential favorites and ends up around way longer than you ever expected.

This year, it was that little singling pixie, Hollie. Week-after-week she was in the bottom three. We heard her called stiff, wooden, emotionless and overly technical. All cold qualities that usually do a singer in with a voting public. They want somebody they can love through their performances, and Hollie didn’t really put off that vibe.

Still, despite that, she hung around. And s...

'American Idol' Down To Three After Hollie Cavanagh's Dismal Bonnie Raitt Cover Does Her In

5/11/2012 12:33am EDT
Holly Cavanagh
Hollie Cavanagh couldn't make America love her.

The 18-year-old McKinney, Texas, native received the fewest number of votes on this week's American Idol and was sent home Thursday night.

Hollie's lacking performance of Bonnie Raitt's breakup ballad "I Can't Make You Love Me", which judge Randy Jackson called "the wrong choice at the wrong time", proved to be the budding singer's downfall.

Mentor Jimmy Iovine said Holly "crashed and burned and lost out to those other three singers," chalking up her woes to her lack of having "the personal experience or the professional experience" to take...

'American Idol' Recap: Hollie Stands Alone At The Bottom

5/10/2012 9:24am EDT
Josh Ledet performs on AMERICAN IDOL
Another night. Another ridiculous two duets to save time. Another week of my intro hunger strike against the ‘Idol’ producers for failing to find a more competitive way to round out the show. I think this will be the last week of this nonsense; however, so you should be getting much more of my musings next week. Be afraid.

And…on with the show!

Phillip Phillips’ First Song: “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” by Creedence Clearwater Revival

Steven Said: You’re living proof that the road to perfection is always under construction.

J-Lo Said: You did a great job and it was a great way to start ...

'American Idol' Recap: Skylar Laine Goes Home + Final 4 Power Rankings

5/4/2012 11:00am EDT
American Idol - Skylar Goes Home
I guess country isn’t for the whole country. I’ve been working under the assumption all year that Skylar was a real contender mostly due to her musical genre: Country/Western. We’ve seen for the last few years that even the most middling of country singers can make deep runs in this show. (See: Alain, Lauren).

I thought this year, Skylar was set to be that Nashville Nobody, but it seems America grew tired of her amateurish twang after awhile and she bit the dust because of it.

All I can say is, America got it right. Of the remaining contestants (In the non-Phillip Phillips Division, but h...

'American Idol' Recap: Joshua Ledet Stuns Again

5/3/2012 10:03am EDT
American Idol - Joshua Ledet Stuns Again
Until they stop with these ridiculous duets and trios and whatevers that I will not mention any further, I am protesting by not writing an intro. I’m sure you’re heartbroken.

And…on with the show!

Hollie Cavanagh’s First Song: “River Deep, Mountain High” by Ike and Tina Turner

Steven Said: The first time I heard you step out and use your blues.

J-Lo Said: It was a different type of Hollie tonight.

Randy Said: You guys loved it? I loved it too!

The Verdict:

Here’s just a miserable song choice. Hollie decided to go with something upbeat and soulful. Something that requires energy and v...

'American Idol' Recap: Elise Testone Goes Home + Final 5 Power Rankings

4/27/2012 9:10am EDT
Elise Testone is eliminated on AMERICAN IDOL
It’s rare that a contestant commits the three mortal sins of ‘Idol’. In the world of shilling for America’s votes, there are three ways to fall into the doghouse. Three separate kisses of death that have seen many an ‘Idol’ contestant along their melancholy way to the strains of whatever former contestant the producers have chosen for that season.

They are:

Talk back to the judges – Time and time again we’ve seen those that complain go home. It’s always best to just smile and nod.

Pick the wrong song – A surefire way to get voted off. Picking an obscure song, one that doesn’t match your ...

Sick Ryan Seacrest Almost Missed First 'American Idol' In 11 Years

4/26/2012 2:03pm EDT
Ryan Seacrest
Ryan Seacrest is a professional, so viewers probably didn't realize he was sick as a dog last night while hosting American Idol. There was talk that Ryan could miss his first American Idol show in eleven years!

Seacrest reportedly came down with a stomach bug two days ago and had been throwing up ever since. In fact, sources tell TMZ that the host was sporting an IV in his arm. Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe was prepared to step in as host, and even led the dress rehearsal earlier in the day. There was also word that they told Cat Deeley to be on call if they needed her.

That said, Seac...

'American Idol' Recap: Joshua Ledet Brings His 'A' Game On Queen Night

4/26/2012 11:00am EDT
Josh Ledet performs on AMERICAN IDOL
Wither Jimmy? If there’s one thing about this ‘Idol’ season that’s been universally great, it’s been anything involving Jimmy Iovine. He may have been getting his sealegs ready last year, but this year he can almost walk on water with his insightful criticisms, the boffo mentoring segments and his ability to make everybody better.

So why take him out? Why leave him off the show in favor of the ‘Idols’ cracking on each other? I don’t understand it at all. Maybe we’ll find out tomorrow that he was previously committed. And if not, I think the producers need to be committed for taking him off...

'American Idol' Recap: Colton Dixon Goes Home In A Mild Upset

4/20/2012 9:30am EDT
Colton Dixon American Idol
When is a surprise not actually a surprise?

Last night’s "American Idol" elimination was a shocker on paper: A seemingly popular contestant with a big following goes home after never being in the bottom three before. Colton Dixon had the look, the girl voters, the piano, and all you’d expect to make a deep run and then he’s out at seventh.

Yes, this should have been a major upset. Except for the fact that he was horrible last night. Yes, nobody is truly safe on ‘Idol’ (Unless you have same first and last name this season) and Colton proved with his early elimination that voters always see...

'American Idol' Recap: Some Ups And Downs As Joshua Ledet, Jessica Sanchez And Phillip Phillips Standout

4/19/2012 7:16am EDT
Hollie Cavanaugh performs on AMERICAN IDOL
14 songs. 14 songs! By my count, that’s a record for ‘Idol’. Granted, my count includes no research, no basis and really no thought. Just Ryan’s telling me that it’s so.

Still. 14 songs! Not even time for a guest mentor. Not even time for any pre-packaged videos. Not much time for anything other than singing and a cool ‘Soul Train’ tribute. Thankfully.

And We don’t have any time to waste. Let’s just get right to it, shall we?

Hollie Cavanagh’s First Song: “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele

Steven Said: You finally did what all of America wanted you to do.

J-Lo Said: You felt every word of ...

'American Idol' Recap: Jessica Sanchez Gets The Judges' Save

4/13/2012 9:19am EDT
Jessica Sanchez get saved by judges
This is the reason the judges’ save was invented. I’ve been piping all year that big-voiced singers like Jessica Sanchez always go home in a “shocker.” Every single year we have some major contender who ostensibly steals most shows only to go home early. It always happens and Jessica was the prime candidate in this age of young texting girls not voting for young singing girls.

She was spared though. Gloriously spared. She barely had to sing a note. Now we all get to wait for that moment where she goes home too early again, thanks to the texting girls.

Yes, Jessica’s unfair ouster was the ...

'American Idol' Recap: The Idols Shine With Songs From The Last 3 Years

4/12/2012 9:39am EDT
Hollie Cavanagh, Joshua Ledet and Jessica Sanchez
Let’s get one thing straight. I can’t stand these duets and trios and whatever it is they’re doing. ‘Idol’ is bloated enough with its pre-taped packages, product placements and other nonsense that two hours is becoming drudgery. Now that they’ve added these non-judged little showcases to what is supposed to be a singing competition is a bit of a bloat too far.

So here’s the deal: We’re not talking about them anymore. We’re not mentioning them. Not discussing them. Not spending any time on them.

No, we’re not going to mention Phillip and Elise tarnishing that Gotye song we all love. We’re ...
