Phil Ochs (born Philip David Ochs, December 19, 1940 – April 9, 1976) was an American protest singer and songwriter known for his sharp wit, sardonic humor, earnest humanism, political activism, insightful and alliterative lyrics and distinctive voice. In the late 1950s while studying at Ohio State University, he met Jim Glover, a fellow student who was a devotee of folk music. Glover introduced Ochs to the music of Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and The Weavers. Glover taught Ochs how to play guitar, and they debated politics.
