Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers Top Billboard 200: This Week in Music

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers Top Billboard 200: This Week in
After a lengthy drought (understatement), Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers finally claim their first #1 album with Hypnotic Eye. Outperforming prognostications, not to mention the sales of the band's previous album (Mojo), Hypnotic Eye sold 131,000 copies. Like so many other weeks throughout 2014, Tom Petty's veteran collective were the only album to surpass the 100,000 copies mark. This is even more disappointing to some extent because of the number of new albums that landed within the top 10.

Eric Clapton, another veteran musician, unsurprisingly debuts right behind Petty at #2. As re...

Those include Eric Clapton, Tom Petty (& The Heartbreakers of course), and the late, great James Brown. Here are five new albums to check out this week.

1) Eric Clapton & Friends, The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale, (Bushbranch / Sur...

7/2/2014 2:00pm EDT
Remedy : Old Crow Medicine Show
Like good ol' fashioned Americana style music like Bob Dylan and Tom Petty? Well, we've got some good news for you - it's coming back, in a big way. And there's few better bands to showcase the blue-blooded American hunger for Folk music than Old Crow Medicine Show.

They've been called everything, from bluegrass to alternative country, but really the only title that truly fits the band is 'folk' - and...

Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann is ignoring rocker Tom Petty's plea for her to drop his American Girl hit as her rally anthem.

However, it appears Bachmann is defying Petty's request; American Girl was played at a campaign stop in South Carolina on Tuesday - but just 30 seconds of the song.

In a past interview, Petty said, "He was just degenerating on us to the point where we thought keeping Howie in the band was actually doing him more harm than getting rid of him. His personal problems were vast and serious.

"We tried e...

Writer's Viewpoint: Disputing An Iconic Song List

1/30/2009 2:14pm EST
It takes a cataclysmic event to derail Overrated/Underrated from its usual Friday spot. Currently the Oscars have been serving as that disruptive force, but this week interruption comes from the most unlikely source: a sports columnist from the Kansas City Star.

This is because Joe Posnanski has suggested on his blog that we stop voting artists into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame and shift our focus to Hall-Worthy songs. Songs he deems "Iconic". His criterion for including a song on the ballot is that it be "A song that represents a set of beliefs or a way of life. So, I see these s...

Overrated & Underrated Pop Duets

10/3/2008 10:11am EDT
Paul McCartney/Stevie Wonder
Sometimes one just ain't enough.

That's a line, okay an amended line, from the rarest of rock treats - the duet. Everyone loves when two pop icons team up for a single. It's just like those rare occasions when two solo wrestlers join forces for a super tag-team.

Just like its brethren in the WWE the results for pop duets are often much less than the sum of their parts. Still, each duet holds a special spot, or two, in the minds of music fans.

So it's easy to say that all duets are overrated isn't it? Well, that would be the case if it weren't for the fact that so many gr...

The Most Underrated And Overrated Breakup Songs

6/27/2008 10:51am EDT
Of all the different types of songs, none is more essential than the Breakup Song. Sure, love songs are nice and dance songs are fun, but when you're feeling blue, a good breakup song is nearly a panacea. Knowing someone else has felt that low and hearing it perfectly articulated can pry the Jack Daniels from your hands for a minute and allow you to once again think that life is worth living.

Artists produce breakup songs with a prolificacy only outdone by love songs. With so many to choose from, and so many situations in which to listen to them, selecting the best breakup song is im...
