Pau Casals i Defilló was born on December 29, 1876 and was known during his professional career as Pablo Casals. He was a Spanish Catalan cellist and conductor. Casals is generally regarded as the preeminent cellist of the first half of the 20th century, and one of the greatest cellists of all time. He made many recordings throughout his career, including solo recordings, chamber, and orchestral music, in addition to conducting. Casals was born in El Vendrell, Catalonia, Spain, his father was a parish organist and choirmaster, who taught the young Casals to play the piano, violin, organ, and sing.
