New DealLIVE: NYC 05.31.02 / 06.01.02 Release Date: 2002 Label: Sound & Light Rating: ![]() |
The New Deal have stuck to their guns, and that's impressive. Though still firmly ensconced in the jam band scene -- at least, audience-wise -- they have resisted the urge to diversify their approach to playing live, improvised house music. At a point in their career where most bands go democratic (or delve into the avant-garde), the New Deal have kept at it. The good and bad of this approach is demonstrated on their two-disc live album, LIVE: NYC 05.31.02 / 06.01.02, recorded in the late spring of 2002 at New York's Bowery Ballroom. Oddly enough, the demonstration is split neatly between the two discs. The first disc is a tad boring, and the limitations of the sound emerge: quiet moments reveal lite jazz like effects (occasionally cheesy synthesizers, electronically emulated drums, or fretless-sounding bass). The second disc, recorded the following night, finds them in much better form and represents a mature achievement for the band. Beginning in media res with the abrupt splice beginning of "Lipstick Pickup," the band swings full-on into the action of things and doesn't particularly let up. There is an eclectic anarchy about the music on the disc as the band rockets into spiraling tangents to breathtaking vistas followed by hyperactive helicopter sweeps over sound canyons. All three bandmembers contribute wonderful varieties of tones to the music, constantly redefining their roles in the improvisation and to each other's instruments. As usual with the trio, the songs that they play are irrelevant, and tend to blend into one another. Jesse Jarnow, All Music Guide
