Johnny Nash
Celebrate Life
Release Date: 1974
Label: Epic
Rating:

Title aside, the opening track "Everybody's Got an Aura" actually kicks this 1974 album off to a good start. Nash and his studio band conjure up a thick, muddy funk that could take a spot on Sly Stone's Fresh album. From there, it's an extremely uneven ride through a multitude of genres. "You Can't Go Half Way" is Johnny Nash's usual fare of Jamaican rhythms melded together with more Western ideas of rock and a feel-good motto slapped on top. Unfortunately, though, the easygoing soul and rhythm of his previous work is gone and now the songs seem more forced and what emerges instead is an album with all the right ingredients, but in uneven measurements. There are successes in the light funk of "Celebrate Life" and in the wind chime-soaked gospel of "You Gave Me Such Good Vibrations." The pop-reggae of "Take Me Back" also manages to squeeze in some country guitar leads and Moog effects to great success. Occasionally, he does seem to want to branch out his approach -- going at times for a bigger, rock-oriented sound that even dips into elements of doo wop, but it never completely succeeds. For the most part, this is a rather formulaic release. Jon Pruett, All Music Guide
