Megadeth's Dave Mustaine was duped by a Christmas card competition -winner who allegedly submitted the work of another artist in the band's annual festive contest.

The rockers invite fans to submit original illustrations over the holidays and the top 10 all get a prize, while the best entrant receives a phone call on Christmas Day from frontman Mustaine, along with other rewards.

This year, however, the winner is believed to have passed off the work of another artist as his own and the metal stars were completely unaware until it was spotted by an eagle-eyed fan in Brazil.

A new species of deadly spider has been named after heavy metal rocker Dave Mustaine of Megadeth.

The Aphonopelma Davemustainei tarantula was recently discovered in New Mexico and Arizona.

The singer shared the news with fans on Twitter, writing, "How cool is this? I got my own tarantula named after me! Totally metal!!!"

Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine is adamant his controversial comments about the Colorado cinema massacre were not intended to "hurt" fellow Americans as they were said in the "heat of the moment" on stage.

The rocker hit headlines this week after he accused President Barack Obama of using last month's movie theatre atrocity and a recent shootout at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin to push through a U.S. gun ban.

Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine collapsed backstage at a concert in Russia on Wednesday night after suffering from kidney stone pains - but he insisted on playing a half-hour set.

The rocker was performing at the Jubileeny Arena in St. Petersburg when he fell ill and was told by doctors to scrap the gig and get himself to a nearby hospital.
