Jackie Mittoo Showcase [Sonic Sounds]
Release Date: 1978
Label: Sonic
Rating:

What separates The Jackie Mittoo Showcase from his other albums of this period? Very little. In fact, one could understandably have difficulty distinguishing this from his other late-'70s releases. Fans of other instrumental combos like Booker T. & the MG's, the Bar-Kays, or the JBs, however, know that this isn't exactly a problem. Like these other soulful combos, Mittoo's group combined some of the best studio musicians of his scene and the result is expectedly rocking. Fans of King Tubby compilations should recognize cuts such as "Champion of the Arena," a track perhaps more commonly heard on the Blood and Fire Tubby collection Dub Like Crazy as "The Champion Version." For fans of ridiculously echoed delay, these (non-)versions might be somewhat of a letdown. There is very little if any dubwise trickery on this record despite the fact that both King Tubby and Prince Jammy are credited as engineers. Again, however, these are very solid roots jams making this LP perhaps best suited for those expecting either straight-ahead instrumentals or the mystery behind tunes usually heard in dub form.
