Midlake is a rock band from Denton, Texas that formed in 1999, when a group of college friends got together to form a band. The band was comprised of jazz students from the University of North Texas College of Music, with Tim Smith on vocals and guitars; McKenzie Smith on drums; Paul Alexander on bass; Eric Nichelson guitar; and Evan Jacobs on keyboards. The band got their start playing local gigs and signed with Bella Union Records. Shortly thereafter the band embarked on the festival circuit and played such events as Les Inrockuptibles, Wintercase, End of the Road, and South by Southwest.
