January 10th, 2012 10:00am EST
Katharine McPhee Smash
American Idol singer Katharine McPhee now stars on NBC’s new drama Smash. She plays an aspiring theater actor auditioning for musical about Marilyn Monroe. The drama of the show ranges from backstage backstabbing to her character’s day job to make ends meet. Those are familiar Hollywood stories, and McPhee lived them herself.

“I think the stereotype is there for a reason,” McPhee told the Television Critics Association on Friday. “I have worked in a restaurant. I wouldn’t say there was backstabbing but there was a time when I was testing for a film and I had an actor who was reading opposi...

She tells USA Today, "There remains a misconception about what (malaria) actually is and that it's entirely preventable. What the message needs to be is that we can get rid of this. A 10-dollar donation for a mosquito net helps. I...

'American Idol' Recap: Was This The Most Boring Finale Ever?

May 25th, 2011 9:35am EDT
Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery
The most boring finalists ever. That seemed to be the conventional wisdom going into the evening. That, despite a strong start, this season of ‘Idol’ was destined to fall into oblivion with two dull finalists that wouldn’t be able to deliver the finale this Renaissance season deserved.

Yes, that might be true. It may have been more interesting to see James square off against Pia or Jacob take on Haley, but that doesn’t necessarily mean this is the most boring collection of contestants ever, does it?

Here’s a ranking of finale pairings from least boring to most boring:

Golden Globes Fashion 2010 - The Ladies

January 18th, 2010 11:45am EST
Golden Globes Fashion 2010
Many of the ladies sizzled on the red carpet at last night's Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills, Calif. Purple was a major pick of the evening, as Sandra Bullock, Fergie, Heidi Klum and Jane Krakowski demonstrated.

As usual black was a very popular color, and stars like Jennifer Aniston, Mariah Carey, Halle Berry, Heather Graham, Vera Farmiga and Penelope Cruz looked fab.

There wasn't a lot of bad fashion, although Tina Fey's billowing skirt was a bit too much, and Rita Wilson's flower pattern dress was simply too floral.

What did you think of last night's red carpet fashion? Who...

Macy's 2009 Thanksgiving Day Parade: Meh

November 28th, 2009 8:51am EST
So, in the spirit of Turkey Day and all that is holy in the holiday season traditions, I got up too early to watch the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade along with an equally weary Liz Lewis. This year was pretty run of the mill.

Like all years past, NBC rolled in with semi truck filled with shameless plugs, an overload of NBC promotions, and puns corny enough to even make younger kids grimace. The route changed, to the chagrin of all those with pricey Broadway real estate who look forward to this fall classic, and the cast of Glee was glaringly absent. With NBC bringing out some real...

Katharine McPhee blonde or brunette
Katharine McPhee has been showing off her blond locks for a couple of months, and we're not sure which look we like better. What do you think? Check out more photos after the jump.

A native of Sherman Oaks, California, McPhee began singing at age two. Though McPhee sang and acted throughout her childhood and high school years, she began taking singing more seriously in college, attending Boston Conservatory as a musical theater major. After three semesters, however, she left for Los Angeles to audition for film and television work.

Though Taylor Hicks' quirky soulfulness made him 2006...

K.T. Tunstall Snubs Duet With Katherine McPhee

January 24th, 2008 12:00pm EST
K.T. Tunstall
Scottish singer K.T. Tunstall has snubbed the chance to duet with American Idol star Katharine McPhee - because she hates reality TV pop stars.

McPhee performed Tunstall's hit Black Horse and the Cherry Tree during her run to the program's season five finale and admitted she would love the chance to record with her idol.

But Tunstall says, "I'm not a big fan of the reality TV-show-pop-star thing.

It chokes the market in terms of young original talent. There's a strong element of karaoke in pop TV shows. I like artists who fire my imagination."

Simon Cowell
Simon Cowell has spoken out about past American Idol contestants Taylor Hicks, Ruben Studdard and Katharine McPhee losing their record deals, blaming the unpredictability of the music industry for their disastrous album sales.

Singer McPhee became the latest star to be dropped by her record label, RCA Records - a subsidiary of Sony BMG - in the space of three weeks on Wednesday , after poor sales of her latest self-titled release.

But Cowell insists artists cannot get too comfortable just because they're signed to a big label.

He says, "It's a reflection on the unpredictabil...
