Birth Place: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Years Active: 1998-present
Genres: Indie Rock

Matt Pond is a singer and a songwriter who formed the band Matt Pond PA in 1998 in Philadelphia. Currently, the band is based out of New York City. While the musicians that have been involved in Matt Pond PA consists of a revolving line-up, Pond is a constant member along with Chris Hansen. The current line-up of the band is comprised of Pond on vocals, Hansen on guitar, Tierney Tough on keyboards, Tre Hester on bass and Ranson Vorpahl on drums.

Pond grew up in northern New Hampshire, which proved a major influence on his music and lyrics. His first instruments were French horn and trumpet. By the time he was in college he had self-taught himself to play the guitar.

Straight out of college, Pond began playing in various local bands, opening up for artists such as Superchunk and Bikini Kill. Matt Pond PA’s 1998 debut, “Deer Apartments” gained them some local recognition and college indie radio airplay. “Measure” arrived in 2000, garnered comparisons to The Cure, and showcased an array of musical instrumentation including acoustic guitar, cello, violin, French horn, flute, bass, and drums.

By 2002 the band had signed with Polyvinyl Records and released their debut for the label and third studio album, “The Green Fury.” Their fourth album “The Nature of Maps,” was issued in 2002 and marked a more collaborative effort from all band members as opposed to Pond, who had been the preliminary song writer up to that point.

2003 saw Pond relocate to Brooklyn and restructure the band with new musicians for the recording of “Emblems,” which was issued via Altitude Records in 2004. The band followed up a year later with “Several Arrows Later.”

It would be five years later when Pond’s collaboration with Hansen, 2010’s “The Dark Leaves,” emerged. Pond and Hansen also went on to composed the score for the feature film “Lebanon.” In 2013 the album “The Lives Inside the Lines in Your Hand” was issued, attributed to Matt Pond rather than the previously used Matt Pond PA.
