Paul Simon And Yo-Yo Ma To Share 2012 Polar Music Prize

Music icon Paul Simon has been chosen to receive Sweden's prestigious Polar Music Prize.

The singer will share the honor with cellist Yo-Yo Ma after they were selected by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music.

Hailing Simon's career, a college spokesman said, "Nobody else is more deserving of the epithet of 'world-class songwriter'. For five decades, Paul Simon has built bridges not only over troubled waters but over entire oceans by rejoining the world's continents with his music. Paul Simon has compiled a library of songs which will remain open to future generations."

Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt all took to the stage to pay tribute to Meryl Streep at the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday.

The Oscar-winning actress received an accolade at the 34th annual ceremony in Washington, D.C. along with Neil Diamond, actress Barbara Cook, saxophonist Sonny Rollins, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Neil Diamond and Meryl Streep are to be rewarded for their cultural contributions to the arts as this year's recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors.

Charlize Theron has been named a United Nations Messenger Of Peace for her work towards ending violence against women.

The South African-born actress was awarded the title on Friday, joining the ranks of fellow actors George Clooney, Michael Douglas and musician Yo-Yo Ma.

George Clooney has been named a United Nations Messenger Of Peace in honor of his humanitarian work. Clooney, who is a long-term campaigner on behalf of refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan, joins fellow actor Michael Douglas and musician Yo-Yo Ma in accepting the honor.

Rockers Metallica have stunned fans by signing up for a Ennio Morricone tribute project.

The group have used the composer's The Good, The Bad And The Ugly track "The Ecstasy Of Gold" to open their stage shows since 1983, and now the US band will repay the musical favor with a cover version of the song for a tribute album due out later this year.

Acclaimed cellist Yo Yo Ma has been made a Messenger of Peace by United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan. The Chinese-American musician is the latest in a long line of celebrities to be honored with the title, including boxing legend Muhammad Ali and actor Michael Douglas.

His appointment marks the International Day of Peace, established by the U.N. General Assembly in 1981. Announcing Ma's appointment, Annan urged: "Let each of us pledge to do more, wherever we can make a difference, to bring about lasting peace."
